Retina Macbook Pro, Mavericks & Live 9.1 Problems

Post by Kap Zuul » Thu Nov 21, 2013 4:19 pm

I´m using a new 15" MacBook Pro (Late October, 2,3 Ghz, 512 gb ssd, 16 gb ram) with Mavericks.

Whenever using Live the following problems come up:
When dropping an effect or certain instruments to a track theres a click/pop or a little lag. Oftentimes when deleting too. Happens often with Multiband Dynamics or EQ8, often also when theres nothing on the track.
I tried with different Buffer Sizes / Sample Rates with the internal and an external Device (Motu Ultralite mk 3 hybrid). The internal sound showed better results but still distorted when dropping/deleting effects. Only when running live with 2048 samples the crackle more or less disappeared (internal card).

I tried with the latest Live 8 suite, Live 9 Suite, Live 9.1 Beta and finally with the release version of 9.1. Everywhere the same problem.

Has anyone the same problems with this machine or OS or solutions?

it's not the problem. don't insert fx while playback if you don't want pop.

No its not suppose to its not suppose to affect the audio. Thats kinda the point of live. That why I originaly liked live because I could add effects in real time without clicks. I dont have that trouble even with 128 buffer (depending on the set size of course).

You should contact support this is abnormal behavior. Unless you have massive sets and your pushing your cpu too high this shouldnt happen.

Few things you can try.

1. Disable Mavericks new feature called "App Nap" for Live and the driver for your interface. If you go to Finder>Applications then right click the app>Get Info, there should be a little check box that says "Prevent App Nap". App Nap shouldn't be really effecting you since you seem to be continuously using it, but turning it off would probably help with stability anyway.

2. Reset your PRAM. Shut down your computer. Hit the power button then hold command-option-P-R. I usually hold it through the apple "bong" noise three times.

Hope this helps

Thanks!
Tried both things but didn't work out. Guess I'll format the OS and try again. I'd be really thankful for other User's experience reports with the same setup (rMBP 15" late october + live 9.1) for determining if it's a hardware thing so I would return the machine and get a new one.
Ableton support only pointed me to the "Reduced Latency When Recording" Option, which also did not influence the glitchy behavior.

It could be because of the increased latency with these new models, unfortunately. I haven't tested it enough to confirm what you're experiencing but it's most likely the problem. See this thread: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-co ... issue.html
