Push or Touchable 2

Post by st303 » Tue Nov 26, 2013 11:39 pm

I have Ableton Suite 9 and i'm looking for a controller for it, i can get a new Ipad with Touchable or Push, the only complication is that even though i have suite, i use Komplete 9 for most of my sounds, so which one should i get?

Depends what you want to do.

If you have Komplete, it's tempting to go the Maschine route!

Do you have Mac or PC? The iPad connects either wired or via wifi, and different types of computers can yield varying degrees of stability in the wifi department.

I've gotta say, I enjoy Push and Maschine. Personally I love a launchpad, some keys and some faders even more.

Sorry to have random thoughts

I thought about that, but i would have to learn another host to go that way and i do not want to do that.

i have a pc laptop which never leaves my desk, so i could connect via wires but i would probably go the wifi route. would that be a problem

yeah i'm currently using an oxygen 8 v2 as my midi controller, and i like it which leads me to a third option of just getting another softsynth (omnisphere) so which way would you go?

I haven't used an iPad with Live before (although I've used my iphone with it a few times), so due to that, I'm kind of stumped on what to recommend.

The iPad can be quite versatile and fun even outside of the studio, but you'd have to be in the habit of bringing it out n about. Plus, many different devices are sort of catching up for the feature to price department. A $700 dollar iPad vs a $900 touch laptop with Win8?? Still, the iPad is a solid device.

Push is pretty fun and LCD displays are convenient at times. Having tactile control of Session View and Drum Racks. And having sequencing are huge bonuses. Plus I think the notes mode is one of the most inspiring ways to explore tonal harmony. With that you're pretty much committed to interfacing with Live every time you use it.

Maschine is fun due to its 'all in one' functionality, And the support of Komplete. It is good fun to have some moments where you are In Live, doing things, and others where you don't open Livd at all and feel inspired to think in a slightly different way. When you use it in standalone mode it is very intuitive and you forget that it is connected to a laptop haha. The support for Live always has it's ups and downs... I've pretty much given up on 'counting on it' as a live controller. But loading and choosing instruments on the thing has never been more fun on any other device.

So it what it comes down to next is, what do you Do with Live? What is your workflow? And how are you hoping to improve your current setup? Like what kind of functionality are you hoping to add?

I really hope some other users also chime in with some more helpful insight.

Sums up the request for a suggestion pretty well.

The answer is always going to be a mix of everything because it would be like asking a forum of guitarists which is the best Axe, or amp or effects to use. Everyone will have their preference.

I have Push and it has really inspired me to get working on new stuff. The drum programmer has revamped my spirit for doing drum tracks from scratch over resampling loops and the chromatic scale feature gets ideas flowing very quick without fussing around with MIDI devices and worrying about the keys on your MIDI keyboard.

Touchable2 is just as great but I would still choose Push over ipad for the tactile feel BUT I find the ipad works very well, fast, has great feedback and offers quick access to devices and tweaking especially the mixer and is great to have as a supplement to the Push. In fact I wish it was around 5 years ago it wuld have made me rethink the purchase of an MCU for track mixing.

My Launchpad is still in great use because I like playing off it with clips over the Push for some reason. Less distracting possibly because of the mono colours but when I am playing my clips into arrangement I like the launchpad for this but wouldn't miss it if it was gone too much.

So my suggestion is to watch videos, look at each controller as much as you can and try and put off any impulse until you find one filling your needs. Push, Touchable, Maschine... You wont be disappointed with any but could easily find a use for all alone or together.

^^ Well said...I use all three but in different situations. I like Push and Maschine when at my studio desk. I use Touchable when out and about, traveling, or on the couch jamming....it is so much lighter and easier to get ideas out using Touchable, MacBook Pro, and the iPad to program midi ideas esp. With the new browser functionality. If/when I do something I like I finish by adding/changing more on my desk with Push and Maschine.

I'd get the iPad first, can do so much recently got this app samplr for messing with samples so impressed! The lemur is great too, you have the shove template (push emulator) which makes me want a push but its at the end of a list of things I need, monitors and MacBook first. Best of both worlds with shove and it shows you what the push is all about, just got touchable 2 but not sussed it out yet so looking forward to that. But yeah iPad you get lemur, touchable and a whole load of audio apps and synths to choose from!

after push now the only reason for me wanting an iPad is Omni TR, but maybe on the long run an touchscreen would even better ?!
anybody tried to map the Orbit controller of Omnisphere to a Logitech touchpad ?

Just would like to give another point of view on the subject. The question hardware controller/iPad controller for me raises one other issue that I discuss here. If you go the iPad way for Live control, then you get limited on also using in the same Live set the amazing software instruments that the iOS offers.

Cheers!

You can get an old ipad 1st generation for cheap on second hand market and install touchAble 2 on it (it's fully compatible and works like a charm on 1st gen) and buy a Push, this way you'll get everything possible :)

I can see the utility for Touchable 2... but touch screens are way different that knobs/sliders/buttons/pads...

I love my Push and no way I would want to give up the tactile interface... and especially the pads with velocity sensitivity are a real midi controller... the touch screen is of no use to me in that regard... So I could see using them together.

I got an iPad a couple weeks ago specifically for music and recording, and the ways it's going to enhance my setup have majorly surpassed my initial expectations for it. But control surfaces haven't been big in my workflow (I sold my barely used apc20 a long time ago), so I didn't buy it specifically for Touchable. I downloaded the app, though, and look forward to using it.
So what it comes down to next is, what do you Do with Live? What is your workflow? And how are you hoping to improve your current setup? Like what kind of functionality are you hoping to add?
Exactly. Answer these questions and you should know what to purchase.

The only downside i see with T2 is that you're still staring at a screen.Makes me feel physically uncomfortable lately.

My biggest downfall for touchscreen is that you are relying on more factors.

Ergonomics, type of connection and stability, the programming of the interface and the connection. You're not looking AT Live necessarily and if something happens... you don't always know right away. And it is easy to get lost in the 'pages'.

But, it is still badass, and I'm anxious for pioneers like those who made touchable 2 to continue influencing and experimenting with the potential for interaction in electronic music.

try the new Hardware midi controller mapping feature, and get the best of both worlds:
