wow freeze function is really limited, huh ...

Post by studiologic » Mon Aug 08, 2005 12:31 pm

it seem that you cant freeze multi-timbral instruments i.e. sampletank, hypersonic, stlyus rmx, kontakt 2, etc when using several midi channels. wow, that is mess up. you can do it in cubase sl/sx why not in live5? i hope i/we do not have to pay for another upgrade to get this function that i already thought i paid for.

p.s. live 5 is still the best

yep, that's limiting, i have to agree.

i do remember someone from ableton promising they'd think of a better / more intelligent freeze during the v5 cycle... which would be very nice. but don't take my word for it, can't remember what the words were exactly.

freezing multi-timbral AND multi-output instruments is something most of us probably need anyway.

i guess your post would better serve in the feature wishlist forum than in general, though.

would also be great if you could record into the arrangement without the track unfreezing itself...

I still don't have 5, but during the beta test I tried to freeze a Reaktor track, and then after frozen, drop in a new instance of Reaktor on another midi track. I tried this a few times and 5 always crashed when I dropped in the 2nd Reaktor instance.

If anyone has a minute, could you give this a try to see if that bug is still there?

Live 5 freeze is unusable here, which is a shame, because it's the only reason I paid for the upgrade. Not only does it load large VSTI (and their associated samples if a sampler VSTI) in memory even though track is frozen, it deletes frozen wavs next time you open the l;ive set!! Can't believe they released it in this state, I have come to expect a lot more from Ableton, very disapointed. :(

but who do you think it will unfreeze frozen track for you if it won't load samples?

If you save the set self contained the frozen audio files are saved in the sounds folder for the set.

The amount of disk space put over to temporary frozen files can also be set in preferences so if you don't save self contained a large cache should give you some flexibility and last whilst you complete one set. (If you don't freeze a pile of other tracks!)

This problem existed on early betas but Reaktor 5 has been fine for me with 10.4.2 in Live 5. (Finally feel as if I'm getting the value from Reaktor I'd always hoped for :D )

Agreed!

The ability to launch without freezing is wasted if you can't record unaltered clips in the arrangement. I'd hoped to be able to put a few clips together from heavyweight plugins then freeze them to use in the arrangement as frozen. I'd assumed that mixer automation would be available as for any audio file.

CPU management if dificult the way it has been implimented. Seems a shame as it's very close to being really useful.

you should also be able to freeze more than one track, i hate waiting more than once!, come to think of it, there's a lot of use for multiple track selection, sorry to go off topic.

Yep, that's my number one complaint with freeze. It's so slow as it is but then you can't walk away and come back when it's done because you have to sit there and freeze the tracks one at a time.

maybe put a 'tape-it' plug on each channel you want to freeze and record them at the same time

Logic Pro does.

Has this be requested in the 'Feature Request' forum? It's a bit time consuming having to do one track at a time..
