iBook users please advice

Post by Guest » Tue Apr 29, 2003 4:52 pm

Hi,

I am thinking of buying an iBook G3 800 or 900 MHz. I currently use an iMac G3 400 MHz, 528 mb RAM and it gives me about 8 tracks of audio with roughly 8 effects (not the reverb though). How much do your iBook's give you in terms of tracks/effects?

I think the iMac and iBook have similar spec because they both have 512K L2 cache. However, on the iMac the L2 cache is 'backside' where as on the iBook the L2 cache is 'on the chip'...not sure if this makes a difference? The imac has an IDE Hard drive but I'm not sure what speed it does compared to the iBook's IDE Ultra ATA hard drive..anyone know?

Basically, what I want to know is....are the new iBooks better/worse/the same as my aging iMac DV SE 400 MHz 528 Ram?...when using LIVE. If the iBooks performance is the same as the iMac then I'd probably go for it..anything better would be a bonus of course!

BIG Thanks for any help offered....

Akroyd

Hi,

Live starts to have a hard time using 14/15 audio tracks with 2/3 effects
running at the same time (with one reverb on the send track).

My config:
iBook
800Mhz
384 RAM
Live 2.0

i get by with my 800. you'll have better performance on the ibook just due to the doubling of cpu speed. true, i'm not screamin' through 40 fx and three first class reverbs over thirty channels on my 2.9 bajigahertz pc laptop, but i can easily get twelve tracks with a few effects on each with reverb. you won't be dissapointed if you upgrade your machine. plus it'll make live gigs a lot easier.

I'm interested in an ibook too, and I've read here that the Tibook's native sound chip is pretty good. Is that the same chip as the one in the ibook? I couldn't find anything about the ibooks chip after 10 minutes with google....

waaiit a minute:

does the ibook have no 1/8" input? the picture on the apple site seems to say it does not. I guess that answers my question above.

i use:

iBook 800
640 megs of RAM
M-Audio Quattro with the OS X beta drivers (cant remember which i am at work)
LIVE 2.0

i currently have not peaked CPU usage in LIVE while running at least 12-13 tracks of audio with 2-3 effects at once. im trying to beat LIVE into submission but so far it is rock solid.

anyone would be glad to here that you're having such a great time with your ibook spence but nobody else is having a hard time beating any powerbook or ibook into submission concerning live.

You will need an audio capture interface for the iBook.
by the way doesnt anyone know how to configure their mac to run audio anymore, i never have any problems with cpu usage on my mac.
