Ugh. Watching the setup process transported me back to the 80’s when it took my family half the day to set up our first multicomponent stereo system. Fuck that trouble shooting process.

It’s cool that you can now run an iPad like an external sound module with MIDI and audio, but I still fail to see that advantage of that over a desktop plug-in. Maybe there’s an advantage if you’re new to music production and only have a barebones DAW because music apps are cheaper than desktop plug-ins, but other than that I can’t really think of anything. But even with that, doing anything more than a single track from the iPad seems like it would be a nightmare. I don’t know how you would navigate a song that has something like 8 different iPad instruments utilizing MIDI and audio.

I haven't spent a lot of time with it, but my setup was a breeze. Easily the best setup for MIDI & Audio for an iPad and I've tried a lot of 'em.

This is something for me that I'm still experimenting with. It's a little bit more fantastical than practical. The reason I want to try is to be able to touch all my synth controls as opposed to having to setup MIDI templates galore. The other thing is that it takes music production back to a limited place. I don't save a lot of presets and I want to explore resampling more. I'm new enough to music production that I'm just doing it for fun, but I'm still trying to grapple with how to actually produce a song using just iPad synths and apps. If anyone has any workflow tips, I'd love to see them.

This guy named Rheyne is using them great in a live environment with Ableton and that might be the place for me to start.

I was just working in the studio on some paperwork tonight, couldn't make up my mind what to listen to in the mean time, so decided to try iTunes Radio. Set up a downtempo station, had it play 5 awful songs back to back, then iTunes took over my screen to show me an ad for the Nissan Leaf.

WTF.

I was upset, and ran right here to tell you guys.

That's pretty lame (the ad, not you running here to announce it). Otoh I kind of like it because it should push people away to use something else.
Maybe it's convenient to have everything in one place but going the extra step to give David some food instead of an already bloated Goliath is good imo.
Have you tried sub.fm?

Btw I don't really listen to soma.fm anymore but last time I did it (groove salad) was playing one of your tracks

Kind of funny too, as I was just going to say that usually for radio stuff I turn on Groove Salad or some other Soma FM channel.

For what could be around a decade my background or sleep music used to be Groove Salad and Secret Agent Sounds. If I was feeling wacky I'd play Illinois Street Lounge after it was added.
But last year I got tired of the playlists...it seemed after all these years they hardly update it and 4-7 days worth of music can get old after listening to it for so long.

My go to station on Pandora and somewhat on iTunes Radio for down tempo/ambient/chill is The Dining Rooms. Give it a whirl. I’m also from the Groove Salad school so I think you’ll like it.


And FFS. Pay the $25 a year to backup your library and kill the comomercials. Do I need to have you master one of my tracks so you'll have the money?

Speaking of WTF on streaming internet radio, Pandora’s algorithm has determined that Kaskade is similar to Kaskade. When I put the station on it played 5 Kaskade tracks in a row, then a Deadmau5 track, and then another Kaskade track.

I think a close second is The Cinematic Orchestra. And if you want to bossa nova it up a bit there’s always De-Phazz and there prolific catalog.

Leaving out the bossa nova aspect, I'm iffy with some De-phazz material; some of it can get a little too fogey-ish for my taste or mood, but their diversity makes up for it a lot. I would swap them for pre live-band Jazzanova/Sonar Kollktiv stuff as a 3rd mention. More on the world beat tip would be some Truby Trio and Moodorama.
