After reading a bit more about the history of apartheid I have to wonder why so much time has been spent historically ridiculing the US for racism and The (white) Man running the show when clearly things were much worse in South Africa and lot more recently.

Are the myrnovas of the world posting on South African forums plastering them with pictures of a racist recent history?

That may be a perception issue. You as an American perceive a focus on your country, while I may do the same for the German history and SA citizens theirs. I can assure you that the story of Apartheid is very well known around the world. I do think the news in the US is VERY US centric, so that it's easy to see how you get this impression. Another factor is of course the focus that the US likes to put on itself. I mean you can not assume you can for example dominate global entertainment and not make people pay attention a lot more to your culture, good or bad. And btw, your country is the last remaining superpower, that is bound to draw some attention.
Did you never wonder, why people all over the world know about Obamacare?
I know not of a single legislative measure in most of my neigbouring countries, yet I know of Obamacare, the Teaparty, Fox News, and that you guys totally changed the meaning of the word liberal. You are NOT just another country!

When I was a little'un, everybody in my school would boycott South African products in protest of apartheid. I don't recall a single mention of American slavery.

No, it hasn't been disproven. That flag did fly under apartheid and is not the current flag which was chosen on Mandela's release from prison. It is incredibly disrespectful and low to post in a memorial thread for Mandela.

Trees aren't a symbol of a nation, and they didn't happen to cut all of the trees down when Mandela was released from prison.
