Fade IN and Fade out on effects

Post by Strogger » Mon Dec 09, 2013 9:56 pm

Hey,
i'm just trying the 30day trial version of live9.
I'm looking for a way to fade in or fade out effects.
I have the EQ light and Filter Delay on my piano and i want to fade out the effect. not only "on" and "off".

can someone help me?

One way to do this would be with an effect rack.

1 - Group the effects (cmd-G). This automatically creates a rack with eight macros.
2 - On the left side of the rack you'll see three "buttons" under the on/off button in the title bar.
3 - Turn them all on and you'll see a label marked chain.
4 - Above this there's a button for "Chain" and "Hide" ("Hide" is selected by default.). Click on "Chain"
5 - In the grid on the left there's a (tiny) box that you can stretch all the way to the right.
6 - Notice the "line" above the box you dragged out (it's a slightly different color than the box). You can drag that too. This creates the "fade"
7 - Rename the chain "Wet" (cmd-R).
8 - Create another chain by right clicking under the first one and select "Create new chain"
9 - Create an opposite fade on this chain the same way and rename it "Dry"
10 - Click "Map" next to the rack's name in the title bar. This will turn everything that can be mapped a color. This INCLUDES the chain selector.
11 - Click on the chain selector and choose map under one of the macros.

This will route the signal to the appropriate effect(s) or leave them dry. You can use this technique pretty much anywhere.

Hey,
thanks for the quick answer, but it does not work. I'm doing something wrong.

Questions:
Point 6) the grey fade line: on "Wet" from blue to grey and on "dry" from grey to blue?

point 8 ) there are no effects in the new chain. If i click on the "wet" chain the two effects show up on the right side. if i click on the "dry" chain there are no effetc. Is this ok?

point 11) i choosed macro1 and play the midi sound but i don't hear no sound. If i put macro1 to round about 12 i hear a sound, but the fade out effect i wanted.

I think I slightly misunderstood what you were asking for. Reverse the "fade" lines in the device chain. So the "Wet" chain should look like this > and Dry should look like this <. That way when you turn the macro knob, it will fade the effect out. It's ok that there are no effects in the second chain. Dry means that the signal from the MIDI instrument is unprocessed. You'll notice on an effect like Ping Pong delay there's a Wet/Dry control. Same idea. You may also need to adjust the overall sizes of the chain lines (not all the way from 0 - 127). That may help too. Play around with it a bit to get the result you want.

When i do it your way, I always have to turn the Macro Nob, correct?

I'm looking for a prepared way, just like Fades on Audio Lines.
I can regulate the Volume with the red line and fade in different sounds.
I want to do the same thing but instead controlling the volume i want to control the effect group. Switching between on and off, but slowly!
I hope i explained that better. :)

Ok. I have a better idea of what you're after now. I'm not at my computer at the moment, but in Live 9 you can record automation of effects into session view clips. Another approach would be to set up a set of "dummy clips". It involves creating silent clips that only have envelopes and routing the audio from the track with the instrument to the track with the dummy clips. A quick search in the forum or google will give more directions. I have to teach a class now. Good luck!

assuming you are talking about controlling the effects on a pre-recorded clip in arrangement view, then the most straightforward way is to put your effects on return tracks, and automate the send levels.

Create clip automation envelopes for the Mix knobs on the effect plugins if you want this on the clip level, or if you're in arrangement, just automate the same knobs in the automation lane.

This strikes me as quiet basic so I'm not sure why the replies are getting so needlessly complex.

edit: ah, the above works fine for filter delay because you have dry/wet knobs, but for an EQ, different story.

erm, i didn't pay proper attention to the devices mentioned in the OP!

automation envelopes are the way to go for those devices. in either session view or arrangement view, you can right-click on the parameters in the devices, which will bring up a pop-up menu where you can choose to automate that parameter. you can then edit the automation curves in the same way that you did the volume.

in the case of the EQ, you can automate the gain on the filters.
