Post by boraxx » Sat Jan 03, 2009 11:07 am

hey gang

i have a novation 25sl, and while i want to keep on using the basics of automap (just map the faders to the mixer) i dont want the annoying AUTOMAP SERVER app to launch every time i open live (Macbook pro here, on leopard).

can i delete this app? do you guys even use this server deal? i have no idea what it's good for

thanks

good for nothing, uninstall and enjoy Automap without issues. Novation will tell you AU is better because they want free betatesters.

It's necessary for Automap Universal (template 38 with wrapped VST plugins and the MIDI automap).

If you don't want the server to autostart, you can easily stop that, without having to uninstall it. If it's in the dock, simply option click/right click the Automap server icon and uncheck the Open at login option. Alternatively, go to System preferences and open the Accounts pane. Then click Startup items and remove the Automap server item. That's it.

Now if you're sure you wont use it, never mind the following tip. But if what annoys you is merely the pop up window, you can disable only that. Start the Automap server, open its Settings menu and uncheck the Show View Window On Startup option. Done. You can still access the window by pushing the View/closed button on the SL, while in template 38.

I also don't agree that Automap Universal is no good. In fact, I use it all the time with several wrapped VST plugs. I know that the MIDI automap also has quite a few fans.

As I understand it, the original release was buggy as h*ll. But there's been a lot of updates since and I haven't had any problems with it at all for well over a year.

There are still known issues with a few VST plugins with non-standard GUI's and I'm sure there are systems where other issues may arise too. But to me, Live + the Remote SL + Automap universal is short but brilliant.

Unfortunately, the above turns out to be BS...
The only reason this tip worked with my setup was that I had moved the Automap application into my Music apps subfolder. Apparently, that prevents Live from auto starting it. But it also prevents access to the Plug-in manager and you don't want Automap Universal without the plug-in manager...!

A correctly installed Automap server will get autostarted when you start Live, if you've set it not to autostart when you login to your Mac.

Sorry 'bout the misinformation!

I find only just having got a Remote Zero Sl, that it is indeed a very good combination.. Saves me shed loads of time and farting about mapping and naming.. Esp when you have taken time to set up your favorite vst's how you want them...

But yeah, sometimes I also get a little bugged by the AU app opening every time I boot Live.. But it's only a single click to sit it the background.. Hardly a big deal, if you do use AU, but if you don't, then I suppose it's best to uninstall it. However I don't know what effect this would have on the SL itself.. but I assume it would only not function on template 38.. Dunno..

the automap server is not only pretty sweet for saving time with vst mapping but the MIDI channel maps are kick ass for live performances and simultaneously controlling VJ software as well.

I found that you can place the Automap app (bundle) in a new folder so it won't auto-start when you open your DAW (Live at least). I called the new folder 'Automap (Disabled)' so that I'd remember where I placed it. Moving the app requires your admin password, of course.

You don't need the AutomapServer to be running if you just want to use your Remote SL to control things in Live. From what I understand Automap is for controlling plug ins. Hope this helps.

I found out that you can use Automator, an app that comes with all Macs, to create a workflow. Instead of opening Live with from your dock/applications folder/finder, etc., create a workflow using Automator to launch the app (Ableton Live). This will launch Live, which will Rewire Automap, but then it will bring live to the front again. If you don't want Automap to open at all, just move it to another folder like others have mentioned.

I hope this helps.
