Does Grouping tracks affect sound quality?
My friend and I are having a debate. Is grouping a neutral operation? He says he hates grouping tracks and that it changes the sound quality. I can't tell the difference. I'll try to do a phase cancel test, but what do you think?

Re: Does Grouping tracks affect sound quality?
ok I just did a test mixing 4 different audio tracks. one group of 4 was sent to a return track and then rendered. the other identical group of 4 were placed into a group and rendered. i then brought the renders back into 2 new audio tracks and phase cancelled them using utility. phase cancelled perfectly and there was no sound. I think that pretty much sums it up, but Ableton doesn't specifically list grouping tracks as neutral operations on their fact sheet (https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/audio-fact-sheet/). anyone have any evidence groups do change the sound?
Re: Does Grouping tracks affect sound quality?
I once grouped two tracks and Live crashed, so definitely not neutral, no.

Re: Does Grouping tracks affect sound quality?
Group track at 0db gain along with drum racks, instrument racks and effect racks have no impact whatsoever and that can be proved with phase cancel tests.
Even Simpler can be setup and play in such a way as to perfectly phase cancel when playing a sample of audio from another track (just need a 1 sample track delay). Similar probably applies to Sampler though I have never tried it (I have with Simpler).

Nothing to see here - move along!
