[update with omitted environment data - sorry!]
Hello all,
I'm trying to use Live to replace all my floor pedals for my looping guitar / vocal rig. While the GUI is a little hard to see from a distance the overall sound and performance of Live has been stellar. The automatic tempo detection has become a key element of my live gigs. I can't imagine living without it now.
I've only got a trial version of 9.0 at this point. Replacing my looping rig is literally the only thing I need Live to do at this point, so once I know that it's solid I'll step up to the full blown suite. At the moment I'm just trying to replace my Line 6 DL-4, which allows me to Rec / Loop / Stop / Resume / Overdub, all with just two buttons.
I'm using a KMI SoftStep (in "notes" mode) with the first 4 pedals MIDI mapped as:
1 - Play / Loop / Record (big button on Looper plugin)
2 - Stop (on Looper plugin)
3 - All stop / Playback stop (from the transport at the top. This is necessary to get Looper to Stop then start again without waiting for the internal clock to come back to 1.1 or putting Looper into Overdub mode)
4 - Clear Looper
5 - Tap tempo (not really involved when I'm looping)
(repro frequency is about 1:6)
Environment:
Macbook Pro - 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
OS 10.9.1
8 GB RAM
Live 9.0.6
Here's the bug:
Press -
- Pedal 1 starts recording.
- Pedal 1 again to end recording / start loop playback
- Pedal 2 to stop the Looper playback (non-quantized / immediate stop)
- Pedal 3 to reset session to 1.1 (so loop will start immediately when I press pedal 1 again)
- Pedal 1 to resume Looper playback.
About 1 time in 6 or so the playback content of the Looper plugin is completely garbled junk. I can tell it's my guitar, but it's backwards, half-speed, off time, bits and pieces. Also, once this happens neither of the Stop pedals work. Total train wreck in a gig situation.
So, LOVE Live... but can't commit to full purchase until I know this isn't going to happen. I might have to go back to hardware pedals (sad face).
Again, newb to Live, but veteran of music software (Logic, Reason, PT, etc)
MANY thanks for any thoughts or suggestions!
Mark

Re: Bad Looper playback bug / glitch
I always find the 'Big' looper multi-function button a little clunky. It can mis-fire or if you accidentally hit it a couple of time quickly, it can do what you have said is happening to you, which is essentially mis-firing the looper to play at the wrong tempo. When it does that 'garbled junk' stuff you'll probably notice that the looper clip tempo has also changed to something like 999bpm.
I find that mapping buttons to the +overdub button instead of the big multi-loop button works much more effectively, and pretty much gives you the same functionality, if you have other buttons mapped to stop/clear etc..

That actually makes perfect sense, thank you! If I'm just barely double tapping the pedal mapped to the looper multifunction button it would send everything directly to crazy town. I'll try remapping away from the "big button" and just experiment with the transport controls inside the Looper plug in, see if I can get it to do what I need. I'm really missing the simplicity of the DL4, but the added features of Live WAY outweigh the time invested to get it right.
At least that's the plan. Thanks again for a quick and intelligent reply!

Re: Bad Looper playback bug / glitch
Probably you have something sending the same MIDI note that the looper uses.
(Are you using Bomes MIDI translator, MIDI Yoke or any kind of virtual MIDI ports?)
