Please Bring Back playback head scrubbing!
Playback head - this is wrong now
I can't say this any louder.. If I could yell at you from my computer. The playback head on live 4 and previous is the most important useful tool. We need this back like it was, at least as an option.
just bumping this for all of the new people who are surely downloading 5, then trying to scrub and sayin' WTF??? Read this thread....

I feel the same way - hadn't known it was missing and am very sad about it. Keep bumping this, I suppose...
What I really loved was when my optical mouse lost contact with the desk, and I was just dragging my hand (with the mouse in it) in space, cm or so above the desk, only half controlling the sound. It was magic.

didint like the new control either.
i mapped play position control to midi, put quantisation to none and for me too it was "WTF? this shouldnt work like this"
i havent time to read the whole thread at the moment, but i support this initiative.
when it comes to play control, its still much more comfortable to do this with a mouse.

yeah, I too realized that even if they had kept the scrub functionality the same as versions 2-4, using the mouse to pull left and right AND jump around provides much more instant manipulability than using just a midi controller to scrub left and right. I'm realizing that the ability to jump around in the clip with the mouse is the part of scrubbing in older versions of Live that I like the most, and use the most to get the sounds I'm after. Guess that's why I stuck to version 3 as it doesn't require holding down ctrl to jump around while scrubbing like 4. 5 is just a whole different animal, some like it more, others don't like it at all. I can see the usefulness of it, and think it should stay, but they should REALLY bring back the old style as an additional option, it was such a core feature, to remove it and replace it with something much different is hurting the way a lot of us work with clips and scrubbing.loudee wrote:didint like the new control either.

I've still been pondering the new scrub in 5, trying to like it, trying to see why some people like it better. Here's my latest thoughts--obviously we all use Live in VERY different ways, from DJ's spinning full tracks of other peoples tunes to people performing their own music that has been pre-recorded, to live looping with instruments, to traditional DAW composing. With so many very different working methods, it makes sense to me that some will like the new scrub better, while others miss the old method they're used to which has been essentially removed.
I think a lot of people didn't even scrub before in previous versions of Live, or didn't take the time to see what it can do with the right clips and a lot of practice. The new version in some ways is more instantly gratifying, or at least more obvious--the playback jumps to where you click on the waveform, which does make more intuitive sense than the old offsetting that occured when jumping around the waveform with mouse clicks. I imagine more people like the way 5 jumps to where you click on the waveform--there is less math and practice required to jump exactly to the part of the clip you want. I myself can definitely see the usefulness in both of these methods/functionalities. The thing that kills the new scrub for me is the g'damn stuttering.
When scrubbing in 5, whenever you click on the waveform with the mouse, the playback stutters at the global quantize value until the mouse is released (thus a glob q. of 1/4 results in the same 1/4 note repeated incessantly, even "none" results in 1/32 repeats). Some may like this "feature", I hate it. We can all agree that it shouldn't be linked to global q, it should ideally be on a pre clip basis, or at least there should be a scub quantize that is seperate from global. I guess what I'm getting at is that there should be a few options, which could be prefs. settings:
1. Old style offsetting when mouse clicking OR 5-style jumping to where you click on the waveform.
2. 5-style stuttering with the whole click-and-release business OR old-style constant forward movement of the playhead, NO stuttering.
This would allow both old and new ways of scrubbing, as well as a few hybrids (old style offsetting with stutters, of new style jumping with NO stutters). In bringing back the old style, they should make it like version 3 where the playhead jumps immediately with just a mouse click (no damn "ctrl" modifier two-handed wackness).
There should be two major issues addressed reguardless--the absolute neccesity of enabling RAM mode to scrub session clips is not handy, not like previous versions, and wastes time and RAM on stage. The linking of the scrub stuttering to global q., as previously mentioned, is also NOT helpful at all, for many reasons described in previous posts on this thread. Sorry to keep going on about this, but seeing as many people like the new way of scrubbing in 5, and many like myself prefer the old style, I think it is important to have both methods availible in Live for the future, and with a few options a couple of hybrid methods could arise, leaving us with at least four distinct ways of scrubbing to accomodate as many different work flows as possible.

just a friendly bump.....I'm pretty surprised that this thread and/or others addressing the new clip transport haven't been constantly at the top of the forum since the release of 5 to the public--seems like most of the issues discussed here were during the beta by long-time users---I guess newbies don't know what they're missing....
