The Future of Push.

For all of those who have had Push for some time now, I have a few questions:

1.) Are you happy with Push?
2.) Are you satisfied with the updates that Push has received so far?
3.) What further features would you like to see added to Push?
4.) What would you like to see added to the hardware of a mk2 version of Push?

(1) Yes,I'm happy with Push
(2) satisfaction level concerning updates for Push: 10/10 up til 9.1 for the melodic step sequencer, which I love and use very often. The other updates not so great - I wanna see Stray's scripts added, TomViolenz's new parameter mappings (why the HELL, really, why the FUCK, is the default Push mapping still a half-assed affair?? They can simply use Tom's, which is infinitely superior in every conceivable way) etc

(4) screen that can display waveforms for sample manipulation. Not anything much else I can think of at the moment, although there must be something. Gotta leave work now to catch the train.

(3) I've posted this a few times but I'll post again here.
I would much rather Ableton concentrate on getting the software for MKI right.

Off the top of my head, obvious stuff that is still needed imho..

• Sample Recording/Chopping workflow. <-click
• Arrangement Record Workflow & Tools Similar to PXT-Live.
• Browser Sample/Instrument Preview.
• Browse & Insert MIDI Clips from hardware.
• Assign other parameters to the Touch Strip.
• 64Pad DrumRack Mode
• Monophonic Melodic Step Sequencer. <-click
• Per Step Automation for Effects on Audio Tracks.
• Control over more than 16 Bars (drumRack) & 8 Bars (Melodic) Step Sequencing.
• Much better use of existing buttons:
  • in Session View, hold Duplicate & Click a pad to select a clip.. click another pad to copy to that pad.
  • in DrumRack, hold Delete & press a Loop Length Control button or a range to delete only MIDI notes within that range.
  • Accent Button, press to access a Mode (similar to pressing Scales) which brings up a page of controls for customising Accent Mode. This mode is quite in depth and requires more explanation than this but any user of PXT-Live will understand what I mean.
• Realtime Swing mode per track, using the dedicated Swing button.
• Integration of the fantastic Parameter Mapping changes made by TomViolenz & co <-click
• 16 Levels Velocity.

• Ditto to tedlogan's suggestion of a screen that can display waveforms.
• Side buttons that aren't on a ball/socket rocker switch. But something that doesn't Click loudly would be nice.
• Side buttons that you can read visibly when unlit.
• Side buttons that are semi-opaque and have coloured LEDs (similar to the main 8x8 grid or Maschine style)
• Slightly more clearly distinguishable Encoder knobs.
• Tap Tempo button that mirrors the feel of the main 8x8 grid of buttons. It's currently useless to me.
• A far better quality Touch Strip. The current one feels CHEAP.
• A dedicated Sample Button (for sampling directly to a drumRack device in a smart context sensitive way).

1) Yes. Maschine introduced me to the fun of this kind of controller but the limitations of trying to arrange using the Maschine sequencer (or having to export audio loops) killed it for me. Push isn't perfect, and indeed is a regression from Maschine in some areas (browsing, screen quality, responsiveness - though I think my aging Mac may be to blame there), but being integrated so tightly with Ableton is wonderful and I love it regardless.

2) Hard to say. There's a lot more which could be done, as mentioned by others above, but it's already a pretty amazing controller and let's be honest, Ableton's philosophy has never been to include every feature you could dream of, but rather to create an intuitive, well thought out workflow with hidden depths, so I'd expect Push to become more refined in coming updates, but still maintaing that relative simplicity and elegance of Live.

3) Well, I've been playing with the device scripts (see viewtopic.php?f=55&t=201849 for my parameter remapping work so far) and there's so much functionality that third parties could add through there (the whole functionality of the controller is defined in Python scripts, so you can literally change just about anything) that the one thing I'd like to see more than anything else is for the source to the scripts to be released "officially" and for us to go wild adding cool stuff! At the minute we have to decompile them, which doesn't work 100% so is quite a frustrating process. Lots of great suggestions above but one I'd love to see would be better browsing, particularly integrating previews as you scroll like in Maschine.

4) Maybe a better display but not really a big deal. Love the hardware as it is.

From what I have seen PXT is a really good investment for Push owners. Maybe Ableton should add another forum for Push, and call it "Push Feature Wishlist"?!?!?? I think that would be a great way for them to see where they need to go with this product.

All you need to do is forward this thread onto Ableton; all the great suggestions on this thread will be all they need to make Push the goto controller. Open up the API and Stray will take care of the rest

I've owned PUSH for about 6 months now and I have to say I'm quite happy with it. I absolutely LOVE the scale function. It has completely changed the way I write music. I'm a guitarist and not a piano player (I refuse to say the word "pianist.") So while I can jam out a little in my own way on piano (synth), I'm not super good at it, so PUSH has really changed the game for me.

Step-Sequencing is also pretty rad. I wish the browser were better but I can live with touching the computer occasionally. Also, audio handling. I do a lot of sample work so Iwish that was better. Although, I do have MAschine for that stuff.

Honestly, I wish I could ditch the Maschine and Komplete but it's just such an amazing and intuitive system that I can't stop using it. I just wish PUSH were more like Maschine in a lot of ways. Or maybe I just wish MAschine was more like Live.

Well, there's always PXT. I haven't went there yet but I think I'm going to. Actually, I'd be quite happy if I could just browse and load Maschine kits on PUSH.

Overall though. LOVE PUSH.

that's mostly how i treat Battery 3, like a big ole sample library. i haven't used Machine so wasn't sure if you could get away with it.

Try AudioModder plugin, converts all kits to Ableton Racks.
