Studio Equipment
Studio Equipment
Hey guys,
Hopefully you guys may able to help me out. I've been learning Ableton and a bit of music theory these past few weeks as I am quite new to making music and was wondering what type of studio gear would be best to have if I end up taking this up as a serious hobby.
I would prefer a set-up similar to Daft Punk's Alive 2007 tour, yes, I understand that it costs a lot of money but I would be willing to save up some money for that:

That's their setup. How can I emulate what they have there in their triangle?
Cheers.
EDIT: Apparently, they used Ableton for all of the MIDI stuff and then the MIDI notes were outputted via control signals into the Moog voyager and monitors, they then used Lemur to control Ableton. How was that all set-up?

Probably by guys that knew what they were doingHow was that all set-up?
Seriously tho, forget about that. If you are new to it all you will be wasting money if you don't know how to use it all. Although that setup "could" be used in a studio it's been setup for performance which is a different kettle of fish than studio use.

Re: Studio Equipment
People's gear choices are determined (if they are sensible) by their needs. I am sure that if you look at acts with an impressive gear collection (for me, minilogue is way more impressive than DP) in most cases there would be a history, choices and reasoning behind every single bit of gear.
I am but an amateur hobbyist but these days it seems to me that the more I focus on gear the less I focus on music. Given that each bit of equipment can break, has to be set up, etc, I think the sensible thing is to use as little gear as possible as you absolutely need for the purpose at hand.
In my case, that looks like computer+Sound card+near field monitors+synth+Push. ( Plus lots of acoustic foam so that I can actually hear accurately what I am doing.
) And I also have two Midi controllers to reach the bits that Push can't reach... But if I could get rid of those I would.

I totally get what you're saying. I mean, I would like some hardware for my studio because I think it is much easier to compose music with hardware more-so than using software. I particularly like the Minimoog sound for bassline and synth work and would take advantage of using Ableton for MIDI use to perhaps do some mastering on the tracks that I create from the MIDI notes from the Moog for example.
How would I hook up a Moog for MIDI use to input into Ableton and to output from Ableton? Something to do with control signals I believe? I understand that I am still a beginner, but I'm just being curious

Re: Studio Equipment
Working with external synths is actually fiddlier.
You need to record audio in, which gives you less flexibility, and which can take up a fair bit of space.
Regarding the how, you will need to access the Moog via External Instrument.
Hot tip: start by reading the manual

If you do it right, you can set it up so that you can record MIDI in, tweak it till you are happy, and then bounce it to audio when you are satisfied

If you're a beginner, you might not want to start spending all that money on a Moog Voyager right now. For the same time of money, you could easily build a powerful modular with capabilities way beyond what the Voyager offers, it all depends on what you want to do.D.E.L.B. wrote:I totally get what you're saying. Also the Voyager is different to the Minimoog and there are plenty of videos on the internet showing the difference between the two.
But yeah, using hardware is definitely more fun than software, just there are a lot of options out there for analogue synths that are not ridiculous money, which might be a better road to go down for now rather than spending thousands on something that doesn't quite do everything. (In all honesty, never been a fan of the Voyager, found it dull)

Don't focus on the gear. It's a trap, the more you have, the more you want.D.E.L.B. wrote:Hey guys,

You can use only your computer after all.
