Post by henrya » Sat Mar 01, 2014 8:07 pm

trying to record a dj set into abelton. Just purchased focusrite 2i4 and need a little help. Searched online for a while but all the youtube videos are not helping.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It might help if you said what exactly you need help with.

You mention recording a DJ set "into abelton" (sic). From where?

Generally, a DJ set would be assembled from within Live rather than recorded from an external source.

Yeah, you've already said "recording a set". Be a bit more specific.

Are you planning on just using Live as a virtual tape recorder, playing from a pair of turntables or CD players and a DJ mixer? If so, you don't need Live. You can do that with Audacity or similar.

On the other hand, if you're assembling everything within Live, by importing individual tracks and arranging them on the time line, there are plenty of YouTube videos covering that.

my apologies for not being specific enough. I am using two turntables and a dj mixer using both serato and vinyl.

I am getting to know abelton more and more and would like to record into this.

Is using Audacity easy/better?

Thanks for the help

You're in luck! Here's a fellow showing you exactly what you want:

Getting Started with Ableton: Part 3 Recording Audio

same interface and everything. Have you seen that one? The process is pretty simple, if you get hung up somewhere maybe be specific about what isn't working for you.

We know you're trying to record a DJ set into "abelton". Repeating that over and over isn't going to get you a solution!

The software is called Live by the way. The company is Ableton (not abelton).

BE SPECIFIC! WHY isn't that video any help? What is it EXACTLY that you're struggling with? .........and please don't just say you're trying to record a DJ set into "abelton" again.

How about a checklist.

[ ] Your focusrite is connected and the driver loaded
[ ] Live is installed
[ ] Live recognizes both the 2i4 inputs and outputs
[ ] Speakers or headphone is connected to 2i4
[ ] You can play a clip in Live and hear it on your speakers
[ ] Your mix set audio source is connected to the 2i4
[ ] You can monitor levels on your 2i4 at the input and with MixControl (if MixControl is installed)
[ ] You have an audio track in Live configured to receive audio
[ ] You can monitor levels of your audio source in Live

I think we need to know what you have tried and what doesn't work in order to help.

102455 (or whatever your name is)

honestly…..Id rather not get your help. You sarcasm and attitude I can do without. I undestand your trying to help but you seem really agitated with my lack of experience and inability to specify. Please don't jump on this thread any longer I will figure it out somehow.

Clyd: I appreciate your help and will be as specific as I can. Detailed post to follow!

I seem agitated? Well yes, to a degree.

It is frustrating when somebody posts asking for help but doesn't give enough detail.

I ask for more info and get nothing. I ask again and get a small bit of info, but not enough.

People have posted links to videos, and you say they don't help but you don't say WHY they don't help, or what issues you're having with recording.

As the saying goes, it's like talking to a brick wall. :?

Lack of experience? Apparently you managed it in June 2012:

So why is it a problem now?

We can't help you until you help us (by giving info on the problem).

First thing to do is test the output driver with a clip in sesson view.

Go to the Ableton browser and look for the Samples directory. Click and drag any one of the items in that directory and drop it in a clip slot on a track labeled "Audio".

photo of the browser (use the samples directory for now)

photo of the tracks and a clip in the clip slot (Nasty Beats)

Image

click the green play button next to the sample you just dropped in (like the green button next to Nasty Beat).

Do you see a signal on the Master (rightmost track)?
Do you hear it playing on your speakers/headphones?

If yes then continue.

On that same track click the IN button by the IN-AUTO-OFF. Then play something with your mixer. Does the level meter in the track show a signal? If you don't see IN-AUTO-OFF hit Ctrl-Alt-I.
