Ideas how to edit voices like this?

Hey there,

The last few days I was struggling with how to edit VOICE samples the way I want them to be. I want them in the following way: The samples should still be hearable as human voices but the words should be no longer hearable (= the spoken language shouldnt be understandable). It is hard for me to explain what I want in english, I am sorry for this. Therefore I add a two links with tracks from a DJ called Rampue which use those effects on voices.

Hard to tell. Is that original Hebstlaub vocal in English? It almost sounded like it might be German in there

What you could do is take a vocal clip and slice it to midi. This slices the vocals into multiple samples in a sampler or simpler that can be triggered with synth keys. You can randomly trigger isolated syllables; it would be a human voice but you would not be able to make out the meaning.

Some bits in the wrongkong mix (nice!) sound like they could be a sample played backwards.

And then, in the examples you used, lashings of reverb.

There's not real any editing going on. If you listen closely the original sound is panned in the center, but very low - you can only hear the S's.

Then there are two effects, one on the right and a reverb return from that effect on the left.

Try sending to a short delay that has a LPF built in and set it with a lot of feedback and no dry signal. Then route that to a reverb, again wet only, and maybe the LFP again.

Pan one effect to each side, and the original in the center so that you can only hear the S's.


I didn't listen carefully enough to hear what the effect was on the right side, but once you get sense of why it's sounding like it does, you be able to make up your own version. The sound itself is nothing special, but it does create a mysterious mood since you can tell someone is speaking, but you can't tell what they're saying or if it's even English.

You could also cheat and have someone speak in a fake language and emulate German or French.

I think "Herbstlaub" uses english samples (all of rampues other voice samples are in english) allthough the song name is german. I can hear something like "...and noone can..." + "this time".
