I would suspect that your output is not configured correctly. From the menu go to Options->Preferences and then choose the Audio tab. Driver type should be ASIO and the Audio Device should be Focusrite 2i4. You can check the input and output configs as well, everything should be selected.
Here is a tutorial page (from Live 8 ) that might help.

After you fix this, just make sure your Master track has 1/2 selected as it's output. It probably already is set correctly because that is the default value but make sure.
Go ahead and test the clip again and it should work on the 2i4 outputs. If that works you're ready to try and record.
From my prior post:
On that same track click the IN button by the IN-AUTO-OFF. Then play something with your mixer. Does the level meter in the track show a signal? If you don't see IN-AUTO-OFF hit Ctrl-Alt-I. If there is no level, check to make sure the "Audio In" is set to "Ext In" and the box below is set to 1/2.
If you see a level press the arm button (shown in the photo as the red button at the bottom of the track. Click any of the circles in the clip slots for that track-- that will start recording to a new clip in that slot.

Yes, he's already mentioned that his output is set to "built in".
Hopefully he's got his speakers connected to the 2i4 output.
I'm frankly amazed that he seems to be having such a struggle, considering he's done it before.

I occasionally find myself in situations where I get frustrated while trying to help someone to do something that I think is a very simple thing. In those situations it is important to be patient and to not patronize the person you are trying to help, a mistake that I've made on more than a few occasions. Hopefully everything will work out here and we can all feel like we've accomplished something.

On the 2i4, there is a little slide switch beneath the headphone output that controls whether the headphones are monitoring channels 1-2 or 3-4. The Ableton Master track outputs to channels 1-2 by default, so....
If your computer speakers are plugged into 1-2, your monitors into 3-4, and your headphone switch is set to 3-4, you will see sound on your meters in Abelton and hear sound on one set of speakers, but everything else will be silent.
I've already made this mistake in the past,
As others have mentioned, you can fix this by changing your audio preferences in Ableton.
