Is it worth buying ? I own a novation sl mk2 and launchpad

Post by HotLoveDrama » Mon Mar 17, 2014 5:15 pm

Hey
I just want to know if it would be worth buying a Push considering these few things:
-I'm not entirely satisfied with my current setup (novation sl mk2 25 and launchpad). I mean both are good for live performance but in the studio setup I'm still always using my mouse to edit things. I find the integration with Live not really good since there is no switch devices or switch track button. I tried Launchpad95 but was not really convinced. I've just seen there is a new update with a push type sequencer. Is it also doing a good job in the production related tasks ?
-I have a rather "traditional" background in music making. I'm a keyboard player and play with a band. But it's been a few years I've changed for synths since I love the 80s  But I'm still not good at production haha. We're more and more interested in the electronic scene. Things are being less "played", sounds are more complex and became more organic. and interesting tracks are sometimes a lot about production. It's not negative at all, just something I thought when I hear bands like Caribou or darkside. (think they found a very interesting way to combine "organic feel" and electronic music :) ) So I thought maybe Push could help going into some other structures since it seems to be a "instrument" fully integrated with Live, which would also help a lot with the production workflow and finding some production, programming ideas (of course I'm not thinking it would be ground breaking, skill and talent are of course the only true tools, wonderful music has been made without Push but maybe it would help somebody like me not coming from a electronic background)
I'm just feeling like I'm not using the complete power of Live or maybe too slowly to really go into it.

What's your opinion ?
Thanks :)

Push Is Ableton Live at the end of the day.

It might have buttons that readily perform functions, bit they are all Ableton live functions still.

Do you work predominantly in Session or Arrangement View?

The latest version of LP95 has a lot of features and can makes for a lot of features similar to Push.

I guess Push's special strengths are the drum rack stuff (sequencing and loading samples), and it's ability to access the liberty. Plus the immediate access to volume/device parameters with visual feedback.

If I'm not mistaken, your Novation remote might have LCD readouts of parameters?? I know the mkii does but have no experience with the mki. Edit: oops, you DO have the mkii. Great device :D

If anything, push will certainly enhance the setup you already have.

Edit: also, for track selection etc. The remote and LP95 do have some limited functionality in that department. There is also a script called 'selected track control'. And then in a whole other department is the wizardry of ClyphX, which can give you many many features on most controllers. But Push is convenient in that it is a no hassle, plug and go kind of device.

I replaced the exact same setup (Lanuchpad & Zero SL MKII) with a Push. It's been amazing - it's a much slicker, quicker, more intuitive experience using Push instead of the SL and Launchpad.

It very much depends on how you use Live, though. I use my Push primarily for live performance rather than production - I still use the mouse quite a lot when producing / working in Arrangement.

Either way I'd recommend Push though, if only to reduce your MIDI device footprint - a Push is smaller and more manageable than an SL MKII and a Launchpad. Plus Push adds quite a bit of extra functionality over the other devices (especially if you investigate NativeKontrol's PXT-Live and ClyphX scripts!)

i own the same setup and also bought a push. Quite satisfied :).

BUT:

I bought push, because i like the LP95 script and wanted a launchpad with velocity sensititve pads. This was the main reason for me to get a push, i dont care about the browsing function, which still needs longer then using a mouse.

I always work in session mode, then I do a quick arrangement to temporary stick some ideas. What seems pretty cool about it, is that it has a hardware feel but much more versatile because you can access all your synths from it, and also that some productions ideas can be directly thought and done from it.
If I get it I would certainly keep my sl mk2 25, I think I would still love playing on a true keyboard. Plus it has some faders which is quite cool for live performances.
