How to emulate DJM-900's Reverb effect?

Post by Danny Hard » Mon Mar 24, 2014 2:49 am

I use reverb a lot while playing so I would like to use it on my podcasts.

How do I emulate the DJM-900's Reverb?

Is it better to use Ableton's Reverb or download some free VST?

Which parameters should I permanently change to make it an one-knob-turning effect, just like I would have on the DJM?

Thanks :)

i don't think you'll have too much luck attempting to emulate it with Ableton's reverb. i love Live, but it's reverb is hardly its strongest feature... probably closer to the bottom of the list of strong features than the top.

The easiest would be to buy a Pioneer RMX, they even can be used as VST in a DAW.

Lives Reverb is about the worst effect of the Ableton line. Emulating other Reverbs with it is very difficult.

Convolution reverb? The utility for creating your own reverb spaces?

I managed to install the RMX-1000 and RMX-500's VST, but none of them has a "pure" reverb, they only have "reverb up" and "reverb down" which appears to have echo added and other stuff.

I need just the simple reverb that makes me feel I'm in an Orchestra Theater, so, if Ableton's reverb sucks, which one is the best free reverb VST I can find (or better yet, which one of the free ones available is the best to emulate a DJM-900's reverb effect?)

Thanks :D

Ableton's reverb sounds bad, which simple reverb is a good option (free or not)? Also, which are the basic paramenters to change so I can have the good old Reverb found in Pioneer's stuff, Traktor, etc.. ?

Have you tried the Convolution reverb in Live? If you don't like that one, there are others. That way, you can capture the sound of the DJM reverb directly.

If you only want a reverb for your podcasts, why be picky? I doubt very much whether your listeners will be contacting you to complain that you dared use a reverb that's not from a Pioneer DJM.....

The Pioneer reverb is really not nice sounding. I had a DJM900 for about one year but then went the DB4 way wich has the best reverbs of all DJ mixers. Maybe the Traktor reverb can sound similar. You can buy the Traktor twelve effects for not much money.

After having played on them for years before switching an A&H DB2 (pretty much the same as the DB4 but with just two effects channels instead of 4) last year the reverb on the DJM mixers just sounds like a big hall reverb to me, so maybe just start experimenting with different hall reverbs or hall presets on algorithmic verbs or IRs for halls on a convolution verb until you find something you like.

Ok, the DJM-900's reverb may not be the best reverb ever built.

My real problem is that Ableton's reverb has too many parameters and even after spending a lot of time changing them I can't seem to reach a normal reverb sound. (I want something smooth, not too electronic or robotic)

How can I have a normal reverb sound (DJM-900's seems good to me) that can be used with a single knob turning (like on a DJM mixer)?

(I want to know how much of each parameter of some reverb vst I should change to be able to use that vst on my podcasts by simply rising wet/dry)

Do you guys know Waves' OneKnob VST? That is what I want, but as a reverb effect.

You could always try a few basic reverb presets, map a knob to Decay Time and another to Dry/Wet. That's basically all the Pioneer settings are. Tweak until it sounds close to what you want. If I recall correctly the pioneers reverb is very basic with just an adjustment for Time going from 1-100% in 1% increments, and you should be able to achieve a similar effect with pretty much anything. Try the size setting if you need to smooth it out.
