Productivity Challenge #1 - 'In The Box'

Post by TheNobleNemesis » Sat Mar 29, 2014 2:44 am

Hello fellow Ableton Forum members! Today, i'd like to offer you a challenge - a challenge that everyone may benefit from in their own way, and have fun with!

This unofficial Live challenge's theme is "In The Box" - meaning you can only use devices within Live to make your composition. The purpose of this challenge is to allow everyone a chance to get to know the ins and outs of Live - many people jump quickly to external third-party plug-ins, when in reality, Ableton Live holds so many possibilities directly in the box!

The rules are simple : Be as creative as you can, and only use what you've got in Live. Samples are allowed, but try not to rely too heavily on them.

If you choose to participate, you should send in your track by next weekend (April 6th). Soonafter, there will be a voting thread created, and after 48 hours, the winner will be decided?

What does the winner get? Something infinitely more valuable than any prize - knowledge and experience.
And the best part? In this contest, everybody wins!

Let the games begin :)

Just check out my soundcloud tracks. Almost all of them are using Ableton Live 8 native effects and instruments. There might be one or two where I have used Novation Basstation VST but the rest are all 'in the box'.

That's what I bought suite 8 for in the first place!

Too easy.

I could make a track using just a sine wave and the included instruments.

The competition needs more limitations to become interesting

I like the intent of this post. But it is too easy for people to want to do their own challenges. I'm happy you've made yourself some challenges, and I understand sharing them to get other peoples examples to contrast and motivate yourself.

It is also very easy for people to chime in and say how theoretically easy it is. It really is, but saying it with a quick hyperlink would really prove a point :P

If this idea ever gains momentum and people contribute, it could turn out to be something interesting, or at least to do things you wouldn't normally do, and maybe learn something.

True, perhaps challenge #1 can be more interesting or limited, but it's a starting point. People try challenge #1, link their stuff, people have a chat about some, etc.

Then after a first cycle, issue challenge #2 which either you set, or is voted via a poll of options for example - make a track using only one of the following routes:

using only percussion
using only voice samples
using only Operator to create a track with percussion, bass, lead, etc
using only Tension to create Kraftwerk covers
recreate a certain track using only Live instruments
create a dark atmospheric ambient track using only Sampler
create a track with only one DrumRack, with any samples loaded into 16 cells.
cover version of Flight of the Bumblebee backwards made with Analog while being covered in honey duct-taped to a termite nest (video proof required)
etc etc

I like this one. I tried it out at the end of my last radio show on www.rood.fm

It is challenging and so much fun! I love operator!
