First DAW?

I've tried trial Live and Bitwig (a couple of others too, but these 2 suited me most). At the moment I own Live lite and am planing on buying something more proper. I had my eyes on Suite but than I've tried Bitwig and it is quite good. I am also eligable for student discount so my options are: 209 Live, 299 Bitwig, 359 Suite. Is there anyone that used ableton extensively and also tried Bitwig that could tell me some pros/cons against bitwig? I know they are both really good daws, just don't want to get burnt in the long run.

I am no expert but in your situation I would go for live (I have not tried bitwig yet so can not comment on it) the reason being as it's your first DAW you are going to want to find tips, tricks, tutorials etc etc and obviously live has this in abundance all over the place. I'm sure bitwig will catch up but ultimately what feels better for you I started with reason and still have it but I tried live and was sold almost instantly and this is my goto DAW all the time now.

Live will definitely be easier to learn… there's a lot of youtube tutorials out there to get you started and there's a ton of documentation. Bitwig is still very much in a beta, so it will make it much more difficult. However, if you like the challenge and are willing to take a bit of risk, it might be fun to go with Bitwig. There's something very satisfying about figuring stuff out for yourself.. so a lack of documentation can be a blessing or a curse.

So basically, if your goal is to make music quickly, efficiently, and work on a platform that is stable, go with Live. If your goal is to experiment, report bugs, and tweak around with stuff until you find something interesting, go with Bitwig. Also don't forget about all the other DAWs out there!

Also from your costings there if you get Suite over Bitwig for just $60 extra you get gigabytes of content and loads of instruments and samplers and drum machines. Everything out the box to get going plus a community backing of 10 years to help you out.

Cannot comment on Bitwig. It does have some nice features but i'm a happy Live user and don't see anything in Bitwig that could sway me just yet.

Bitwig is kind of new to everyone, so that could be a con. Live has a larger user base, and it is easier to search Youtube or forums for help.

That said I haven't even tried the Bitwig demo. I have tendencies to try a demo, make a nice song, and then buy the program just to keep the song.

Anyways I have Ableton and other DAWS to do what I need.
