Before I update to 9.1.2....

Post by Daniel_S » Thu Apr 10, 2014 2:09 pm

Is there anything I should manually backup first?

9.1.1 is the first version of Live I've had so not sure if any files/folders get replaced when performing an update.

Thanks

Hi Daniel :D

Always back up stuff anyways

If you update to 9.1.2,it will overwrite your files etc,as I found out to my cost 8O

Best thing is to have a new folder made up in the same location as the old version.
When you download,Live will ask you are you replacing the old version? Or installing the new version to another location?
Make a new folder in the location of the old Live version (in my case its on my main drive C)

This way you can preserve you files/folders :D

Hope that helps

You can just install to a different directory if you're concerned, (I always do that) but I've never had a problem myself (knock on wood). Live 9 always installs each version in a subdirectory of Live 9 (I'm pretty sure you can rename the subdirectory, if you create a new shortcut to the program file - I did that recently, and no issues so far). You can uninstall old versions later on if you like)

Live 9 would only change the factory core directories as far as devices are concerned; I think.... the assumption is that everything would be backwards compatible...)

Excellent, thanks.

It's just all of my saved presets and racks I'm worried about losing.

Sets and samples are fine as they are saved elsewhere anyway.

Your User Library will remain unchanged, it's just the program itself that will be updated. As an aside, this is one reason you shouldn't set your User Library location to somewhere inside the actual application directory.

Question for Ableton, if you're still monitoring this:
After updating, I usually delete the following files for the previous version that I am no longer using:

1. Users/Home/Library/Application Support/Ableton/Live previous version folder.

2. Users/Home/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live previous version folder.

Is this advisable?

Seems like a safe, standard procedure, but I thought it would be good to get the official word on it from Ableton.

Thanks

Program itself, and *any* MIDI Remote Scripts you may have installed as well.. Very important to note that "Replace" installs (manual updates) delete the program folder, and re-create it effectively nuking anything you saved there.
