Vocal Comping in Ableton
Vocal Comping in Ableton
Obviously an ignored concept to the good folks at Ableton. Recording live musicians, managing multiple takes etc isn't fun, hopefully they'll address in the future but I was wondering if anyone has a good workflow or technique to share.

Takes and comping in Live is not really doable as far as I am concerned. Especially if you are tracking someone else.

I really enjoy using Live for vocal edits and recording. The 'comp' recording process is quite a different mindset from those used to ProTools, but it's really flexible for edits I find.
I wrote some of my thoughts on the process I use on my blog a month or so back...

I've successfully comped vocalists a few times when recording into arrangement view by recording clips into session view and then later splicing them in by hand. Easy peasy.
As long as you start at the same point on the timeline (or you take note of where you're starting playback and recording), it's no big deal to drag them over and mix-and-match takes. Once you have the parts for each that you want to use, you can just drag the edges of the clips together so there's no overlap and you get everything, then Consolidate to a single take.

There are plenty of workarounds, which in practise are not really any slower than comping. Do use comping in other software and find it presents other problems which Ableton's slower method conveniently avoids.

Can you expand on that?Sage wrote:There are plenty of workarounds, which in practise are not really any slower than comping. Do use comping in other software and find it presents other problems which Ableton's slower method conveniently avoids.
