I've tried three times to really quit. Max I managed was one month.
Back on them again now. Not as heavy as before, but still about 10 a day.
Now if anyone even tries to explain to me that I should quit, it virtually drives me to violence. I just don't want to hear the obvious.
I'm sure I'll eventually get off them ... just a matter of finding the right time.
Fair play to those who have managed to quit.
I am going out to the garden now for another one.

Try coming off coke and booze - you save hella money and you can buy all kinds of shit when you get into recovery but man - that's hard!
Fridays are the worst - but it's the out of town shit and shows with lots of girls - lots of girls - lots of girls and even more girls
When they're in the booth to put their purse behind the decks and they rub their titties up against you and say "Sorry, but do you need a drink?"
come on - fuck! If I take one more drink or do one more line of blow I'll end up dead or in jail
one day at a time!

Err. I'm actually smoking right now, so I might not be the best person to take advice from, but well. Good luck to anyone who tries..!

Clean herre for over 3 years, and hatred of the little fuckers helped a lot. Hatred of the tobacco industry helped even more.
Just buy "The Insider" and make yourself watch it every time you accidently light up.
But that whole ritual and process is a big part of the addiction! In my personal case, I don´t think the biggest problem is a physical addiction to nicotine, in fact, the problem lies more in the fact that I use smoking as a "social crutch", and also that I´m used to those little things like smoking after the 1st morning coffe, smoking after each meal, and smoking before going to bed.noisetonepause wrote: I can only say that if you think about it rationally, not smoking should actually be easier than smoking, as smoking involves buying the things, lighting them up, inhaling the smoke, etc. etc... Oh, and funding the tobacco industry...hambone1 wrote:You wanna give in?
Think of all the things you could get back:
Sexy brown teeth and bad breath
Attractive yellow fingers
Athletic shortness of breath
Greyish, wasted skin
Wasted money
Shit congealing in your lungs and arteries
A better chance of contracting diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, gallbladder problems and everyone's favorite, cancer
If you think it's worth it, go for it!
Don't think I didn't try!trash wrote:hansje ! next time you fly over brighton

But the fuckers wouldn't let me out. Can you believe that?
Next time I'll pay attention when they explain about the emergency exits etc.
I don't think you're telling anyone anything new here, do you?hambone1 wrote: You wanna give in?

Instant gratification at your fingertips...
Oops.....but thats the one to beat, init?
Dude whether you find a way to buy the upgrade to Live 5 or not - I can not tell you how much more significant quitting smoking is in the grand scheme of things.
I quit smoking a few years ago after a pack a day habit for 21 yrs. I screwed up my back and needed surgery and the doctor told me I had a 35% less chance of healing properly if I continued to smoke. Needless to say, Having already been through one back surgery before, the last thing I wanted was to find myself needing to go for yet another revision because I continued smoking. Back problems suck, back surgery sucks even more.
So I quit -and havenn't looked back... I recommend you hunt down and download a program called "Smoke Free Stats" It is free, it runs on your system with very little nuisance factor. After you set it up, it asks you a few questions about your smoking habit and then it provides you with statistics every day reminding you why you quit smoking.
It is one thing to quit doing dugs amd booze, if you're the type of person that needs to do that... smoking is another type of beast altogether. I used Smoke Free Stats when i quit... the simple fact that the minute you stop smoking you decrease the chances of having a heart attack by 50% was pretty compelling. Among the stats the program gives you is the amount of money you are saving on a day to day basis... Also it calculates a number of other things for you - like the amount off time you will need before your lungs and body have reversed the damage caused by smoking etc...
One thing I did that helped me not smoke was to buy chewing gum by the case - I always have a pack of XTRA sugar free gum on me - so my breath doesn't smell like ass like it used to when I smoked. Your wife will love you for not smoking too... Then you can become one of those a-holes that gets all bent out of shape when someone smokes around them... That's the thing, after you quit, being around smoke makes you want to gag...
good luck btw...

Neodude,
You've quit smoking after 20+ years of 20+ fags a day.
This means to me that you know what you're talking about.
And if you say that reminders of how bad smoking is for you keep you off it, I'll just take your word for it.
Now I've quit too, after almost 30 years.
I hope you'll grant me that I too know what I'm talking about, OK?
I was just mildly annoyed by Hambone, who was quoting himself on the subject, while
If it helps anyone though, I'll just swallow my irritation and shut up

It doesn't really help me if someone, who doesn't know what he's talking about, keeps repeating the obvious.hambone1 wrote:I for one have never understood how anyone who has any knowledge of the damage it does to one's body could possibly do that to themselves

I have huge admiration for anyone who quits. I'm not trying to irritate anyone by stating the obvious. I know that when I've had problems with issues in the past, sometimes seeing the obvious in black and white helped me to pull my head out of my ass and help me to stop ignoring it, and face it instead.
Only then could I confront and defeat it.

the little application was handy in the early stages - first couple of months. It seemed to be there to catch me in those moments when we tell ourselves, "Ok I'll just have one cigarette" there it was on my desktop at work. Having quantifiers that changed constantly with every day that I wasn't smoking made it a bit fun in a way. It wasn't that I had reminders of how bad it was - is that I had constant input about how good it was to not smoke... The fact of the matter and to be completely honest about it had I not been about to go into surgery and my wife about to have a baby I probably wouldn't have been able to do it... Extenuating circumstances... In my case It was pretty easy to walk away.
With my free time and extra dough I've been able to put together a cool little studio... and all that tension and nervous energy just comes out of my fingers - nowadays all I need to do is look at my baby girl (who is now 2.5 yrs old.) reminds me that I want to stick around to see her grow up. Who knows when my time will come but I'm pretty sure it won't be lung cancer or smoking related heart disease... though years ago a friend of mine who smoked for a long time finally quit smoking and 3 months later she was dead ... sometimes I entertain the idea that in her case if she kept smoking she probably would've lived longer...go figure

I'm curious how the not smoking project is going. Lat night - one of my closest frind's mother died. She died of lung cancer. My grandma died of lung cancer, and shit , my news anchorman Dan Rather died of lung cancer - *sob*
Yes we all have to go sometime in some way but lung cancer is a f*cked up way to go... with the exception of some of the more horrible types of cancer like bone cancer, brain cancer, and so on lung cancer - eewww....
My friend's mon hung on for 2.5 yrs. in a deteriorated half dead state hanging on hanging on - for nothing. That's 2.5 years of morphine, poison, and a quality of life I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy... well ok I don't have enemies that I know of...
I was reading about a lawsuit the feds are trying to bring up against tobacco companies... 132 billion dollars... shortly after it was announced for some reason the whole thing was changed to 10 billion dollars... Foul play? In this administration youbetcha...
well i hope you guys stay quitted - f'realz... and if you smoke don't trip just keep trying..
