Question about manipulating effects

Post by doofdum » Sun Apr 27, 2014 4:00 am

Hello!

I'm a newbie to Ableton and was pointed in the direction of this forum for my questions. I apologize ahead of time if my terminology is poor - I'm still learning the program.

So here's what I'm stumped on:

I have a little guitar riff I punched into a midi clip. I want to add an effect (like flanger) after 8 bars. I figured there would be a way to just make a separate clip within that same midi track or something, but I can't seem to figure it out. If I turn on the flanger, it is applied to every clip within that track. Can I assign it to individual clips, or will I have to make a completely separate midi track to add flanger to? I appreciate the time, fellas!

Thanks,
doofdum

I'm not sure I 100% understand what you're currently doing, but it sounds like you want to possibly use automation. (at least automation is one way to do this and not affect all other clips for a given track)

Click on the E with a circle around it under the Groove section on the instrument properties. This will open the envelopes section. Click the upper dropdown box and you should see an option for your flanger. The lower dropdown box will then have properties of the flanger effect - hopefully "On" which you can set.

Do some googling/youtubing on automation to figure out how to "draw" the automation curve. You essentially want to enable the flanger for those 2 bars/or those notes and then turn it back off.

You can also do this in arrangement view for the notes you want.
