I'd like to be able to record in realtime everything coming into a few different tracks (the master track and a few others that get input from different channels of my external soundcard). However I'd like to do this, continuously, while starting and stopping Live's main transport.
The reason for this is that I'm jamming with other people playing acoustic instruments, and it's much easier to sync to their tempo if I don't have to worry about never hitting the main transport for fear of messing up the recording of the session.
So I have thought of a few possibilities and now I'm wondering if anyone can think of better ones:
1 - Maybe the simplest would be to be satisfied with just recording the master track. Then I could make another track in live
that has the master as input and some other external out on my soundcard as output (and set monitor on), and use another
computer to record using the outputs of the external soundcard. However then I'd only get the master, and would have to deal
with making my old computer work properly..
2 - Using some other software to record what comes into the external inputs and not bothering to record the master.
I don't know how to do this (route audio from soundcard first to some other software and then out to Live, or
the other way around without being affected by the main transport), but I'm sure it's possible. Maybe using
http://jackaudio.org/download for example. But the master track is probably the most important..
3 - Somehow sending output out from Live to other software, independently of the main transport.
Does anyone know a better way to do this?
EDIT:
I found one solution but I'm still hoping for a better one:
I realized I can have several instances of Live open. So in my original instance where I make the music, jamming and stopping/starting transport, I create an additional track for each of the tracks I want to record continuously (I'll just use the master track as an example here). I turn of the monitoring on this new track, set master track as its input and as output I set a different one than the main out (1/2) of my soundcard, say output 3/4.
I then take two jack cables and connect out 3/4 on the soundcard to a free input on the same soundcard, say input 7/8. I go to my other instance of Live (which will only be used for recording), make an audio track with no monitoring and soundcard input 7/8 as input. Then I can have this recording the main track all the time regardless of what's happening in my main Live instance.
Obviously this solution has some problems, mainly that it will hog soundcard inputs (several if I want to record several different tracks) and also having an additional instance of Live might be unnecessarily heavy on the CPU for just recording a few tracks.
Any other ideas?
Record several tracks in realtime while stopping transport
Re: Record several tracks in realtime while stopping transport
I've never used it, but there is this vst: http://www.silverspike.com/?Products:TapeIt
It purports to create a wav file for whatever signal it's getting in a plugin chain.

Re: Record several tracks in realtime while stopping transport
Thanks! I'm gonna give that a try.
EDIT: There seems to only be a 32bit version, does anyone know anythign about a 64bit one?
