Where is swing quantize?
Where is swing quantize?
HI all
I was digging through forums and manual but couldn't find a straight fwd explanation on how to apply swing quantize on Ableton.
I know about the Grooves I can load. Is that the only Swing tool? I do want to know if there is a specific non grooves swing fucntion.
Note: I do not have Push
Thank you
Sebastian

No there is only the Groove Pool.

Re: Where is swing quantize?
nativeKONTROL.com makes scripts for a lot of controllers. The script for my mpd32 for example, has the swing control built in (as well as a lot of other PUSH features). I know nativeKONTROL has other scripts for other controllers that also provide access to the 'hidden swing' feature. most of his scripts are really budget friendly ($7.50 for the mpd32 script with free updates), maybe he has scripts for one of the controllers you already own. Beginning of the mpd32 (MPDRx) script walk through video shows the Push swing.

@Sebastian ...
oddly enough, the old school (Live7) global swing was ditched with the advent of the groove pool. Here's a simple way to recreate the Live7 global swing in the current version that works very well. It requires a small set up ... from then it can be saved as part of your default set template.
Create a groove map with these settings:
Base: 1/16
Quantize: 0%
Timing: 100%
Random: 0%
Velocity: 0%
(i saved mine as "swing 16 global" for obvious reference)
now any clips assigned to this map in the groove pool will respond to the 'global groove' amount which appears next to the time/signature window (top left of GUI) ... swing can then be dialled in using 'global groove' amount. (If all clips in a set are assigned to the 16swing map, the swing is applied globally to all clips). ... also note: need to assign a clip to this groove map before 'Global groove amount' field appears.
save this with your default set template set so it's loaded to start .... voila; old school Live7 style global swing

Re: Where is swing quantize?
I did not have the impression that the OP wanted a specific swing setting, but access to an extra swing function independent of Groove.
The answer is yes. The swing function that Push uses with the swing knob is accessible to the API.
Clyphx has access to it. (And I would assume M4L does too)
The problem with clyphx is that you can assign the function only to buttons (up/down or specific values).
If you want that functionality using a continuous encoder, you would have to route your Midi somehow with something like Bomes MT through Clyphx into Live.
(Shouldn't be difficult to set up though)
M4L may already have an encoder solution.
Regarding the Groove pool though, I would have a question: Does anyone know how to save a default Midi clip so that a newly loaded clip is always already assigned to a certain groove?!
(You can save Audio default clips as I have found, but I didn't see anything regarding Midi clips)
Thanks

Re: Where is swing quantize?
was looking for this as well..
I can't believe they would remove such a simple task and push more marketing products on the users in order to obtain such a basic element of production. I attempted to adjust some settings but did't hear any difference and it most certainly wasn't a "swing/shuffle" effect. Thumbs down for ableton for over complicating the creative process. I use several programs so I didn't miss it, but now that after learning it's been removed Im highly disappointed.
not specifically the same thing, of course the "off" has always been a feature..but using it to obtain something similar, seems to be the most direct way..
something very simple, basic, straight to the point..
thought I'd share..

Re: Where is swing quantize?
these groove map settings (same as my post above) allow a variable amount of swing% to be dialed in via the 'Global Amount' (x% is variable ... it is not a map for a 'specific' setting) ... can be mapped to encoderTomViolenz wrote:I did not have the impression that the OP wanted a specific swing setting, but access to an extra swing function independent of Groove.

the map above does indeed replicate the old LIVE7 swing function ... i've been using it for a couple of years now ... I have saved it to open with my default LIVE set so the swing function is available without any further setup required. I feel the same ... simple old school variable swing is a more useful tool to me than a 1000 preset groove maps. Horses for courses though ...john.clees wrote:was looking for this as well ...

Re: Where is swing quantize?
It is not the same because by default a new clip will not have this groove selected.
The magic of the old swing was that you could crank if and all your shit gets nice n' swung.
If m4l has access to such a parameter, that could be kind of fun to play with haha

Re: Where is swing quantize?
But anyone can get access to the Swing that Push uses via clyphx and if I'm not mistaken this means it's an API function that M4L can call too. (Unless Stray cooked up something himself for clyphx, he has certainly done this for other things like the SNAP function, but usually he just makes API functions available in a straight forward way with clyphx)yur2die4 wrote:It is not the same because by default a new clip will not have this groove selected.

But all the people should in any case first try it out before complaining.

expressing creativity should not be this technical.
I dont have push and I have abelton 8.
What are my options exactly?

Re: Where is swing quantize?
That's a ridiculous statement. Being creative in any artform requires you to be proficient in using its tools. That was the way before software (ever wonder why great composers started out so young?!) and it stays the same now just as much, because software is such a powerful and potentially limitless tool.john.clees wrote:expressing creativity should not be this technical.

To answer your question:
Pushs Swing function (that you can use without Push thru something like Clyphx) was only introduced in Live 9.
Live 7 had a (I think almost identical) swing function.
With Live 8 you may be out of luck for a swing outside of the groove pool.
That I would agree with, is something that does deserve to be complained about (if true - maybe someone can clarify)
Re: Where is swing quantize?
I know ... but it's not hard to assign all your clips to this map ... then it functions just like the old V7 swing ... I nanually assign clips to this map as I record them ...yur2die4 wrote:It is not the same because by default a new clip will not have this groove selected.

This is a pretty good workaround to achieve a variable swing control that can be applied to the whole arrangement.
Re: Where is swing quantize?
Found this in the Live Object Model... Haven't had need to play with it before to be fair...TomViolenz wrote: Clyphx has access to it. (And I would assume M4L does too)
swing_amount float get, set, observe
Range: 0.0 - 1.0; Affects midi recording quantization and all direct calls to Clip.quantize.
Cheers

Based on what?TomViolenz wrote: That's a ridiculous statement.

Ive produced music for over 15 years, and used samplers, multiple hardware, sequencers, keyboards, and multiple computer programs.
creativity is the flow of energy. Its like looking for a sample and you don't have a search feature. You have down time trying to find something that you're looking for in order to express the feeling that you have at that moment in time. that's exactly why I liked using the MPC sampler when I had. it was touch and go not getting lost in approach.
Ableton is marketing technical aspects and its safe to say they make a lot of money doing so.
as its been discussed in interviews and something I agree wholeheartedly, people have too many options, too much technicality creates for a boring emotional missing sound. Hence all the safe boring output of music for the past 5 years. All techical and no passion. (imo)
I'll look into the options as mentioned. Ty for the additional responses, its appreciated. I definitely don't think Id buy nine, as I was told Id possibly get for free from the music store, only to spend $700 and then was told by abelton I bought it 60 days too soon and I didn't qualify. I was considering the idea of getting 10 maybe but I am now leaning toward machine vs paying 100's for the same thing only with more lazy shortcuts that nearly write a generic track for you.
Music is way over produced in general, and way too techical, when they are creating programs to add short cuts, for upgrades you need, for basic swing fundamentals..
