Hi all,
This is probably going to come off as a stupid and particularly newbie-ish dilemma, but here's where I'm at:
I'm pretty new to Ableton in general and have only recently started to sink my teeth into it. I was lucky enough to be gifted Live 9 suite so although I have no idea how to use it I do have max for live. Ive never really had a need to use it beyond the pre-made presets until now. Recently Ive been fascinated with the sequencing style of 303s. I know that the 303 sequencer has been hated on but I find it particularly inspiring as a semi-improvisational instrument. Ive been trying to map my launchpad in such a way so that it acts like a 303 sequencer but have had very little luck. I got a little carried away with pen and paper trying to figure out what each of the 64 Launchpad buttons would do. I figure with the 8 x 8 grid there should be just enough room to cram a 303 style monophonic sequencer on the bottom half and a 909 style on the top, with buttons left over for step selection/visual metronome and maybe even the ability to call up different patterns. From what I can gather this is something that should defiantly be doable with max for live, although I am increasingly out of my element so maybe I'm wrong on that...
My question is this: Is it feasible? and if so is this a project that is way too far out of a beginners grasp for me to even be thinking about? Or is it a reasonable goal to work towards? Also I'm not sure where to start picking up max for live skills besides the built in tutorials and manual. Some direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Launchpad sequencer, Where to start?
Re: Launchpad sequencer, Where to start?
Yes, it's doable, and yes it's pretty ambitious for a beginner.
I bet if you google 'launchpad sequencer' or 'APC40 sequencer' someone's already done a lot of the work for you already.
I actually made a sequencer natively In live or my launchpad a few years ago. It was a bunch of stupid midi routing and needed like 64 midi tracks or some nonsense, if you're interested in that route.
Anyway best of luck.

Re: Launchpad sequencer, Where to start?
Thanks for the replies.
I looked into how you may go about making a sequencer without max for live and it seems like it would not be quite what I'm looking for. I am interested in how well something like that would work though and exacly how you did go about it. I have done some blind googling and found some completed patches that I'm sure would be helpful if I were slightly better at deciphering them. Hopefully soon I'll have a better understanding of what's going on.
As far as the recommendation for Launchpad95 I should have added I am already using it. I absolutely love the user1 mode chromatic grid and use the launchpad for that more than for its intended purpose. However I am not a fan of the sequencer included in Launchpad95. Ideally I can create the 303/909 sequencer of my dreams and have it integrated with launchpad 95. Kind of replacing the current one. Anyways I'll keep plugging away at it hopefully I'll start to make at least a little bit of noticeable progress soon.
Thanks again!

If you grab our free Oktopad device you'll be able to see how the User 2 mode works with Max4live...
It's on our website www.isotonikstudios.com it'll cost you a tweet!
Cheers

I don't know anything about this but since I haven't seen it mentioned, looks like the EvilFish 303 comes with scripts for Launchpad?
