Can I Create THIS Effect With Any Stock Ableton Plugins?

Post by Domokun » Fri May 09, 2014 5:48 am

Not real big on Swedish House Mafia but heard a song by them today (One) on the radio and really liked their use of an effect throughout the track. I'd like to apply it in my (attempts at) songs but am not sure what it is. Can anyone tell me which Audio Effect this is? Also, if Ableton doesn't have it as a stock plugin can anyone suggest a VST?

The best way I can describe it is a "metallic" type buzz/mild distortion. When you hear it I'm sure you'll know what I'm referring to. I've attached a link to the youtube video below and the effect I'm after occurs rapidly and disappears quickly either through some sort of automation at the end of a note or applied to a one shot sample at the following times: 00:53-00:55, 01:02-01:03, 01:13-01:14. It's use occurs throughout the song in the same loops but thats all you'd really need to hear to know what I'm referring to. Also it sounds like they're sending the Melody to a Return track with the same effect on it as well from 1:34-1:49 (the Melody being panned left to right, not the drone).

What is that sound? I really like the subtle use of it.

Any knowledge shared would really be appreciated. I apologize in advance for subjecting you guys to SHM ;)

Thank You!!!!

Maybe a bitcrusher? It sounds like lo-fi ring modulation kinda stuff, so my first idea is bitcrush / sample rate reduction.

I don't think redux can do it, though.

Thanks for the help Cool, yea I've experimented with everything Ableton has to offer as far as stock audio effects go.

Maybe someone else can chime in with their knowledge of the effect? Also any suggestions regarding a VST that can create similar effect? I know there's someone on this forum that knows this!! :)

Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's just the patch, not an effect. It sounds like the lead in Sandstorm lmfao

I didn't listen to it for a long time but it sounded like the exact same sample pitched up with a metallic edge to it. One way to get that metallic sound is a combfilter, if you have Zebra you could do it with Zebrify. Another way to do it is to use the Resonater effect in Live. Either way it just sounds like they are automating the volume/send to something similar to the above. Just my 2c.

Not a bitcrusher but a downsampler. It's included with the bitcrusher in Live's Redux effect
