tl;dr all the responses so this might have already been said.

Sit them in front of your music setup and tell them to have at it. You can even help them out here and there, minimally. I’m sure they’ll come up with a gem in no time flat because it’s just that easy.

If you can ring a doorbell, you have the talent of an electronic musician.

Total rubbish. If it was true the world would be filled with incredible electronic music. It isn't, it's loaded with heavily compressed generic edm.

Photography is cheating; you have to work with oil paints.

Bob and Jim Smith are brothers, Bob decides to learn painting and Jim decides to learn photography. They both decide to start their respective arts by attempting a picture of the old barn.

Bob spends some time stretching canvas and sketching, mixing paints and his barn painting takes about five days. At the end of this process his painting looks like boiled dogshit. Bob says to himself "I'm going to have to work really hard for the next five years to become any kind of painter at all!"

Jim steps outside and takes the photograph, three seconds later his image looks exactly like the barn, he uses a few further minutes in photoshop to add the text Jim Smith Professional Photography in large curly white writing across the bottom.
He says to himself "I am a professional photographer, I ought to buy some nice prime lenses"

One year later, Bob has created three paintings, and the latest of which looks a little bit like what it was meant to be. Meanwhile Jim has taken around fourty seven thousand photos and spends most of his time on twitter humble-bragging about people hotlinking his images and threatening them with legal action.

Tl;dr. I like your analogy ;)

I think beats was being sarcastic. Or ironic. Or whatever.

But yes, there is a lot of mediocre music around. That's one if the consequences of the way technology democratized the music business.

But there is also more amazing music around, and it feels as if the Darwinian process of genre development is working far more quickly. I think it's great. There's a lot of dross but fuck, there sure are many gems.

Yeah I agree... wider access to the means of production has created a load of amazing music. I don't get it when people start going on about people cheating. The only thing that matters is originality and style.. if someone can make something stylish and original then I don't care if it was easy work or not. The only person who benefits from thousands of hours hard work is the producer.
internet irony is a difficult medium innit.

It doesn't matter if you're cheating as long as you are winning :P

Beyond my STUNNING rendition of the C major scale, 8O and some very questionable pad drumming, I can't really play any musical instruments to any great degree, and primarily use generative processes to originate my ideas.

Guess I'm cheating even more than some of you lot - I dont even WRITE some of my music. Nyah, nyah, nyah! :P

Frank Zappa's Jazz from Hell is a completely electronic made album (with the exception of one live song) that was composed and played with a Synclavier (an old big sampler/instrument).

If you listen to it you'll agree with the fact that is an impossible-to-play-by-humans album, and Zappa himself, when some songs from the album were played live by the ensemble modern orchestra, said that the performance was 80% accurate!!!

This is the case when even virtuoso musicians can't play electronic music!
