Minilogue - Setup and effects with the Xone 4D

Post by Madsiboy1995 » Fri May 23, 2014 10:47 am

Hej forum!

I've been a fan of Minilogue for quite some time know, and i recently bought a Xone 4D. I'm trying to copy their setup just for fun, but i can't really figure it out from the videos Ableton has filmed. The best clue is this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baMs9P50J-w

I'm struggling with their looper system, and how they change sample in the HH for example. Do you think they uses an effects-rack with different effects they scroll through?
Does enybody have an idea how their setup is created?

First, thanks for posting the link I really enjoyed the video.

Second, you should watch the video again, he's pretty explicit about his setup and the detail is fantastically thorough and well explained. Each of the outboard controllers 4 on the left 4 on the right and 4 more added on the right are mapped to specific tracks in live with specific sounds/loops (he explains what each one is along with a demo of each). Within each sound/loop are 4 controls, a volume fader, a filter on/off knob, a filter frequency knob, and a delay knob (maybe a wet/dry but it could be something like a send volume too). He's got another midi controller that is mapped to additional effects parameters-- this he doesn't explain as well but my guess would be that it's mapped to the effects parameters on a return track (or tracks). I'm telling you, watch the video over and over again (did I mention that?), if something doesn't make sense give a time reference and ask. I've only been doing the Ableton Live thing for about six months and this is the first video that made me feel like someone was giving great insight into their setup (and I actually understood it).

Thanks for the answer, bu all of that i figured out allready. That's pretty basic as you said youerself :P

Try to look at this video:

Here he's explaining something about their looper system on each track + he can change the sound with the press of a button. I can't figure the sample switch thing out...
I can use Bomes Midi to trick ableton into using arrows gestures, but i don't know how to lock each button to a specific track...

Here are my observations, we can compare notes:

The XONE 4D has an array of 24 buttons A-X, 3 per channel. The simplest way to change samples would be to map each button to a clip slot (i.e. track one gets 3 sample choices, buttons A,E and L). A more complicated way, which I think you imply by your post, is to map two buttons to scene up and scene down and an additional button for track play on each track. This would allow you to have unlimited sample selections but you'd need to keep track of which scene you were on which might be difficult. Of course there are even more sophisticated solutions possible but Sebastian seems more practical than that and while Bomes MT could do many things you'll need to decide for yourself if the extra effort is worth it.

You could see the Looper device in the chain when they showed the Live screen-- I'm sure you saw it too. The closest I could come to a function like his was to set the device Length to 0.2.0 with Feedback at 0% and Input->Output set to Never. I then mapped the Multi-Purpose Transport Button to a midi push button. In this configuration the Looper in overdub mode acts like a signal passthrough where you just hear the track audio. If you click the transport button it switches to Play mode and then loops the last 0.2.0 bars. Adding feedback would allow more looped signal to bleed through in overdub mode. My only concern is that if the Looper is in Stop mode there is no signal at all, he might address this some way to be sure to get signal on the track at all times.

Found another really nice demo video that you might like. Alex Banks doing a demo of his Live set-up using Xone DB4 and K2's. Pretty thorough coverage of track, scene and preset settings too.
