Long, but worth it.

At the end he mentioned the FFC is allowing people to comment on their site about their net neutrality hearings. Shortly after the episode aired all the people commenting crashed the FCC servers. :P  :x

Can anybody here sum up both sides of the debate in two concise sentences?

The video I posted is a pretty good summary. But to really summarize it the major ISPs want legalized extortion. They want heavy content streaming sites to pay them a fee to ensure end users will have a good experience. These fees would also keep smaller sites of startups from competing because they won’t be able to afford the fees.

Also there is absolutely no evidence that networks can’t handle the traffic as is while big ISPs are also currently the most hated companies in the US for poor customer service, high subscription rates, and globally comparative shit speeds. And there’s little to no competition.

Go capitalism!

Sorry that was more than 2 sentences. :x

there's plenty of evidence that they CAN handle it... the evidence even has a name "Fiber Optics"
As of 2011 the record for bandwidth on a single core was 101 Tbit/s (370 channels at 273 Gbit/s each).
that's 101 terabits per second or 103,424 gigabits per second...
or... 105,906,176 megabits per second.

how does that bad ass Comcast 25 megabits per second for 60 bucks a month sound now?

That’s why it’s 100% a mafia style shakedown, demanding a cut of profits to ensure continued quality service on their turf. Refuse to pay and they’ll throttle your service just because they can.

Why do I always find myself in the opposition? I swear it's not intentionally...

From Wikipedia: Proponents often see net neutrality as an important component of an open internet, where policies such as equal treatment of data and open web standards allow those on the internet to easily communicate and conduct business without interference from a third party. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_neutrality)

So if I understand this correctly, proponents are demanding that a third party (the state) interfere in the market in order to prevent a third party from interfering.

The logical contradiction here should be apparent to all those present with an IQ over turnip.

As for beats me implication that the current ISP market is an example of free-market capitalism... well let's just say I LOLed.

I love how people are complaining that they might be actually have to pay for what they use.

FFS. :x

I found the term double(triple) dipping pretty apt.

First they got A LOT of money from the government to build out a nation wide fibre network to the home (which they haven't done).
Then they ask horrendous fees from the consumers (afaik about double or tripple what an equivalent deal would cost here in Germany).
And finaly, they want the content providers to pay them for the content to deliver it to the costumer who has already paid for the connection.

To top it off, they manage to put their lobbyists as the heads of the government agency that is supposed to regulate them.

Don't you just love croony capitalism... ;-)
