to my old ears this sounds a similar to stuff i've heard from an artist called Gramatik (spelling?). anyway, what word best describes this style of music? (genre?)

This genre of music is most commonly referred to as electro-funk.

To me his latest album sounded squashed to the point of distortion in mastering.... maybe that's part of the aesthetic...?

He's got a good ear for using samples in catchy ways and has a knack for a good beat that kids like to dance to, basically.

I saw him last year and was bored as shit at the show, but I appeared to be the lone exception to an otherwise rapt crowd.

We often need to learn that lesson that most audiences don't have a DAW and could care less how the music was made. Every artist could probably name something they put that totally sucked but people still like it.
