Zoning in Operator

Post by jer_mcclain » Wed Aug 17, 2005 9:59 pm

is it possible to set a key range on each of the oscillators in Operator? i was thinking that if you could it would make a nice little drum synth.

no, you can't do it with one operator. but with a bit of live routing it's possible to set up a nice drummachine. just did one a few days ago to get used to live routing and filter midi notes.
you can try it out here! perhaps it is what you're lookin for.

cheers urs

It's pretty easy to just render percussion sounds to audio and then build up a library of Impulse "Operator percussion Kits" .
Which would be the best otion.
I've been using Voxengo Recorder with Operator in demo to grab .wav files like this and build up kits.
Or program rythmic patches with clip envelope automation.
Render then drop the clip into arranger view / chop it up / consolidate and render chops and then drag and drop them into an Impulse Kit and save.
It's not bad either getting extra custom Simpler patch sets this way also.
Especially if you layer a few Operators with effects eq etc and then sample a set key.
Drop the .wav / .aif into simpler and have lots of funky little atmospheric drones.
So lots of options available there.
Must save up for Operator as using Voxengo recorder is fine but sometimes you get your jam on in demo mode and kind off forget you can't save the set D'oh  .
I personally think Live + Impulse, Simpler & Operator would be more than enough with the extra sample mangling features in Live to write pretty solid tracks with.
It's definately a felxible synth and is capable of some seriously out there effects and decent pads and great leads.
It definately is a killer bass synth as is that's for sure.

hey uese, thanks for that file, that's a pretty cool idea. can you exlain how you made that?

i think i'm going to post this to the wishlist. it's fine to sample from operator but it would be nice to add some automation to the synthesis to give a bit of variety.

Saving for it as I type Adam :D .
Definately verging on obese with all the Operator humble pie I've been eating of late.
It really shows it's true colours after a bit of work.
And the fact that you can now save device chains with Lives effects and do totally berko clip envelope automations on the who enchilada well 8O 8O  need I say more  .

Paraclude,
there is a really god description on how you filter midi notes here!
So, the first midi track is just sending midi notes to all other five tracks. In the five operator tracks i'm just filtering the midi notes with the pitch plugin to specify the area of witch notes should be played. For example you set in the pitch plug the lowest note to C3 and the range to zero, then only note C3 will be played on this track. If you set the range to +12, note from C3 to C4 are played and so on....
