M4L > Live's interface question

I decided to move this discussion from the "feature wishlist" branch to this place. I've got this comment as a reply to my request:

I've learned to map previously "unmappable" things by writing M4L devices to do it. Once you have a basic idea of the LOM it isn't that hard to whip something up.

Please, can someone be so kind to give some broaden comment about that? I have the access to M4L, I run through all the tutorials of just MAX/MSP some years ago, and I'm an experienced Reaktor user. I did not dive deep into M4L yet but maybe after reading such comments I will. Can you please tell a little bit which "modules" (or how do you call them in Max?) are able to communicate with Live's interface? Or which tutorial covers this topic?
