Automation snap to grid

Post by Jason_t » Mon Aug 04, 2014 12:08 am

I often have to zoom in to the beginning of a note or start of a clip to get the automation to line up, would be very useful if there was the option to snap automation to the grid.

Automation is driving me nuts! Being able to get precision from the mouse is a total drag, no pun intended. Just being able to type in the values somewhere would be fantastic, but I agree it would also be nice to have temporal snapping available.

I agree - I've been wanting this since 2005.

The current workaround would be to select an area, position your cursor slightly below/above the automation line, drag the selection up/down, and then you'll have automation points exactly on grid.

It would of course be far better if it worked like you're describing. I make electronic music - it doesn't need to be that humanised.

I also agree it would be great to enter the values of automation points, and perhaps being able to enter min/max values, curves, and other stuff for an automation selection.

Also: I think vertical snap would be nice. I don't need much accuracy when adjusting automation data. Take note velocity, for example: For my kind of music (retro game music), it would often be practical with 4 different velocities - not 127. It could work like the note grid (ctrl+[1-4]), only using ctrl+alt as a modifier. It's not top priority, but it would be cool. :)

Agreed!
Especially typing in values would be great.

Live's automation isn't as elegant as other hosts for many tasks.

Editing especially can be painful. That said I haven't used a DAW yet where I would give it a perfect score for automation.

Automation input is a good idea, this could be done by right clicking on the automation point which could bring up a value box for that point & even preset curve options etc... to choose.

I've been asking for this since 2007 viewtopic.php?f=3&t=59083&hilit=automation

This is the feature that I am missing the most after switching from FL Studio.

I think they might have to fix the automation latency issues before allowing snap to grid. It would be a bit silly to have on grid automation which plays off-the grid. Embarrassing for a new feature.

They'll also need to address what they did with L9 snapping, "smart-snap" with no alternatives. I imagine most people want to choose how their objects snap, I know I do.

It is absolutely essential to be able to reduce the number of automation points. This is a current source of live freezing accentuated by memory leaks.
Snapping to grid would be one solution. Deleting double points should be added on. A smart resampling witch would keep most of the shapes when reducing the number of points would also be great.

You can actually do this by selecting the portion of automation you want to resample and using cmd+del (mac) or ctrl+del (pc)
