Automation Recording not working right?
Automation Recording not working right?
Hi Guys,
i have a simple question. Maybe i´m just doing something wrong but it drives me nuts..
Say i map a knob of my midi controller to a knob (cutoff) in my 3rd party synth via midi learn.
Then i try to record for example a a simple weep from the movement of my controller.
Ableton records the automation but doesn´t record a smooth sweep but just rough steps of that sweep. So it just steps up values every 16th note or so.
The same happens when i moove a button with my mouse and try recording that. Not smooth value changes but very huge steps.
Anyone had this problem and knows how to solve?
By the way......it records smooth midi when i map my controller to an ableton device or when i just record simple midi cc not maped via midi learn.

it has to do with e value scaling of your midi messages in your midi preferences...and whether your using absolute or relative knobs

Another factor might be automation thinning. This can be changed in the options.txtInversoundzzz wrote:it has to do with e value scaling of your midi messages in your midi preferences...and whether your using absolute or relative knobs

Re: Automation Recording not working right?
When you record automation, Live automaticaly reduces the number of break points. Probably to make the work on automation more managable. You can change the agressiveness of that thinning with a single comment and a value in an option.txt.
Use Youtube to find out how. Some women explained all the options.txt options and what it is in the first place nicely on there. (forgot her name)
The question why you can only influence this behaviour in the options.txt is a good one though. This should be an option in the Preferences!

Re: Automation Recording not working right?
Hi guys,
thanks for the help so far. I´m using Ableton 9.1.
I dont think it has to do with with value scaling or such since it is not only a problem when i start to move a knob but it happens trough all the movement. As i understand it valuescaling and using relative or absolute knobs only is a question of what happens when the controller has a different position than the softwarebutton.
So would only be a problem when the controller picks up the softwarebutton - so at the beginning of a sweep.
I´m also not using the ableton internal midi mapping but the midi mapping (midi learn) of the Synths (it happens with different synths so cant be them)
I might try the thing with midi thinning...that might help
