Live 9: increasing or decreasing tempo with foot controller

Post by marcellolemoni » Tue Aug 20, 2013 9:48 am

Dear beautiful people,
I am pretty new to live (9) and working myself through the on-line training of MacProVideo.com and learning through tutorials and the manual, but I need advise on this: I need to increase or decrease tempo during live performance with probably 2 footcontrollers. I am already so far that I know how to assign a controller (in this case the cue level of the APC 40) to control the tempo, but I seem to be stuck on how to assign a button to increasing the tempo value with a certain amount (lets say 3 at a time). I found this:

Set up your MIDI controller ---> THIS I managed

Configure 2 buttons on your MIDI controller to send the same Control Change number.
Configure the values sent by the buttons when pressed like this:
Set the value of button A (to decrease the tempo) to '127'.
Set the value of button B (to increase the tempo) to '0'.
Map the buttons to the song tempo:

Enable Live's MIDI mapping mode. Here I find problems.
Click on the global tempo field, press one of the controller buttons (both will be mapped).
Set the Control Type in the Status bar to 'Relative (2's Comp.)'
Exit MIDI mapping mode.

Here on the third line I seem to miss something: 'Set the Control Type in the Status bar to 'Relative (2's Comp.)' I cannot find anywhere on the screen where to do this. See picture. Image

Also I f someone knows what kind of footcontroller I will need for this? Thanks for your kind attention and help.

My guess is that it should be on the bottom left part of your screen whenever you click on the parameter, in midi assign mode.
I'm still not convinced this is doable, though. Just in case, do you have m4l ?

The increase value is wrong, it should be 1, not 0.

After fixing that, I'd suggest deleting the mapping you created. Then, create a new mapping by sending the decrease value twice. That should cause Live to guess the correct mapping mode. Either way, you should see the mapping mode in the lower left of Live's window upon creating the mapping where you can change it if necessary.

you're sending a note, not a cc. won't work that way.

Thank you, but maybe as I am not yet so well educated, I need a little help on what you say. Thank you for that. You say: the increase value is wrong, it should be 1, not 0. Where can I see this and change it? And I do not see anything at the left bottom of the screen.

This is exactly what i'm trying to do! Need to change tempo during live performance. Did you get it sorted in the end? Would love to know!! Thanks, O

i can make a m4l for this purpose, if needed.

I attained this functionality with two separate buttons on my BCR2000; not every controller I own would work this way.

The BCR lets you assign controls to increment/decrement a CC. I set the 2 buttons to the same CC and set one to increment and one to decrement. So, pushing either button increases/decreases the CC value within the 0-127 range. I have another knob on the controller set to the same CC, so I can vary the tempo continuously in big sweeps, or I can use the buttons next to that knob for tiny changes.

The one knob is the only control actually mapped in Live, but b/c the controller uses the same CC for the buttons it works on the same feature. I'm not sure how it would work any other way.

With clyphx you can make every button controller behave this way. Just assign the BPM < and the BPM > functions to two different buttons.
