Yamaha 01x + Studio Manager + Live5, does it work?

Post by DirtRider » Fri Aug 19, 2005 8:44 am

Hi,

In my on going process of finding the perfect combo for my setup (some HW synths, a lousy mixing desk that needs replacement and a lousy soundcard that needs replacement) I stumbled upon the 01x and maybe this is what I was looking for...

But: as far as I see it the 01x is a PITA when it comes to controlling channel stuff WITHOUT the Studio Manager thing...

Is someone using the Studio Manager as VST in Live5, does it work? PM me plz. I'm abuot to spend some money and quite frankly I want to be SURE :)

Thanks,

Dom

PS: The Tascam FW-1082 is still an option but the lack of HW EQ'ing is turning me down for the moment

Not for sale here and they only have one stereo out from computer to mixer, I need more.

Are there really no 01x users here??

We use the o1x with Ableton, have throughout the beta period, LoVE it!
Haven't used the Studio manager(SM) pluggin yet though. You don't need it to control Ableton from the o1x, just need SM to control the Pluggins in the o1x ffrom Ableton. It does control Live quite well, you have to use Cubase in the Romote mode to get it to work(hopefully Yamaha will make a patch for Ableton). The sound is great, contrary to some people on this forum. The tascam has no LCD, which really limits it's funtionality, I still don't get the no lcd thing. I can start playing aroung with it (sm). I do know that you use Port 4 on the mlan midi setup in order to use studio manager. Use port 1 on the midi setup for Remote Control (mackie control mode) and use the device type of Mackie Control. The interface can be used as a pluggin or a stand alone. You can run 16channels of Mlan to the o1x from Live, and mix the alongside of the audio ins in the o1x, just like the 8 channel inputs, compression eq, sends etc.

What part of belgium are you, I've played a bunch of times in Ghent and Antwerp ----Montuno Vibes,Deca Dance etc............Love it there ... bring on the Duval,Leffe(blonde/bruin),Stella and Chimays!!!

We use the 01X in live 5 as well. When we initially hooked live 5 to it, I thought it was built specifically for it. I'm not even sure what the studio manager gives you other than a new window to control things with. As far as recording 8 tracks at the same time, mixing, navigation, etc. it totally rocks! A few people here have compained about some missing mackie features in Live with 01X specifically, but I just must not use them. We set up 8 mics on all the instruments, drums, etc. and use the 01x to record takes and navigate around. All the players have a few at a display where we can all see the levels in Live. Having another "studio manager" window would just block the awsome Ableton view. Sometimes we have a guy come in who mixes some prerecorded stuff on the output channels and takes samples from our live play and mixes into the Jam. Like jammin with a DJ who is making loops of us playing on fly. Personally I don't see how we would use ableton without an 01X.

Magnetotron,

I have to totally agree with you, this combo is superb. We too pull in clips on the fly, it's great for improving and building grooves. The missing MC features are not really noticable to us either. haven't really figured out what they are frankly............... Great combo! Glad to see we aren't alone out here in the wilderness of o1x/Live

Thanks man, that was the reply I was looking for!!!
So if I understand correctly, you can redirect 16 outputs from the computer (e.g. Live) which contains let's say individual softsynth signals, impulse tracks etc, combine them with the audio of my HW synths and render all that back thru the 01x, EQ'ed and all to a master track in Live?
Sounds almost mythical!! Damn, I have to check this desk out!

What's the deal with the Port 4 vs. Port 1 thing?

Can you use the EQ VST plugin with channel settings in Live? I haven't tried VST's yet in Live apart from the internal instruments, so if this is a silly question don't shoot me ;)

I'm from Steendorp, it's very close to Antwerp (17 minute drive) and I work in Antwerp :)
I also know Deca Dance by name when I worked in Ghent :)

I see you know your beers... ;)
