lol....idk, i'm just not very amazed by it, it's lacking playability....if it was a good instrument, iot would make me want to play it more....it just doesnt have that exceitment for me....it was getting really cool, and i was getting really amazed at one point, like when i was banging out some drum patterns and then recroding them immediately, its really awesome how you can bang out a melody and sequence it immediately, then bang out another one...its great like that....but the actual melody you can make, it just feels unusual, like i keep trying to picture where the notes i want to play are, and it's all just a mess.....i dont think you can play it like a real instrument. maybe for people who cant play real instruments...they can pretend its an instrument....i need to have it in chromatic mode, so i can tell where the notes are in relation to eachoether, but when you have that, it takjes up too much space with th notes....only if you have it in key mode, where allt he notes are in key does it let you make meaningful melodies....but at that point....it's just like having all white keys on a piano......so it's not really like playing an instrument....login wrote:Same experience with the piano here, it took years.Inversoundzzz wrote:after having push for about two weeks now, it's really underwelming me,,,,as an instrument no i dont think this works like that...except to bang out melodies that a monkey could

You have to learn to play it, which takes time. I've seen people play the living hell out of it, and amazingly well. For example, the guy playing Flight of the Bumblebee. If one can do that, surely you can learn to play anything on it.Inversoundzzz wrote:lol....idk, i'm just not very amazed by it, it's lacking playability....if it was a good instrument, iot would make me want to play it more....it just doesnt have that exceitment for me....it was getting really cool, and i was getting really amazed at one point, like when i was banging out some drum patterns and then recroding them immediately, its really awesome how you can bang out a melody and sequence it immediately, then bang out another one...its great like that....but the actual melody you can make, it just feels unusual, like i keep trying to picture where the notes i want to play are, and it's all just a mess.....i dont think you can play it like a real instrument. maybe for people who cant play real instruments...they can pretend its an instrument....i need to have it in chromatic mode, so i can tell where the notes are in relation to eachoether, but when you have that, it takjes up too much space with th notes....only if you have it in key mode, where allt he notes are in key does it let you make meaningful melodies....but at that point....it's just like having all white keys on a piano......so it's not really like playing an instrument....login wrote:Same experience with the piano here, it took years.Inversoundzzz wrote:after having push for about two weeks now, it's really underwelming me,,,,as an instrument no i dont think this works like that...except to bang out melodies that a monkey could

And the bit about having all white keys on a piano...not really like playing an instrument...
Of course it's still like playing an instrument. It IS playing an instrument, just not how you are used to.
I'm afraid you're being uncreative. No offense intended.
Re: Videos of Push actually being played like an instrument
Keep in mind that he is only playing the top portion of bumblebee.
Still impressive in many different ways though.

i dont even care about the piano keys, what about the clicking sound and static sound every time you switch tracks wtf how are you supposed to do anything creativ eon the lfy if whenever you want to switch trackw in note mode it clicks and acause a cutout in the ound. lik ewhen you change a routing it majes the same thing happen *****ing stupid stupid thing is really pissing me off, you cant perform with this live if theres cutouts in audio whenever you switch tracks....it wasnt doing this before, why in the flying ffff is it doing it now.....
Re: Videos of Push actually being played like an instrument
Yes. I approach gear from a DIY/punk/unconventional standpoint, so for me, anything that can play at least 1 note is an instrument of sorts.
So if someone can play just a part of Flight of the Bumblebee, and play it well on Push...more than enough for me.
I know something like Push will never please everyone though, and that's totally fine too. I mean, why should I care what other people do anyway?

Does this happen to everyone? I'm at work so can't check. How severe is this static sound you have?Inversoundzzz wrote:i dont even care about the piano keys, what about the clicking sound and static sound every time you switch tracks wtf how are you supposed to do anything creativ eon the lfy if whenever you want to switch trackw in note mode it clicks and acause a cutout in the ound. lik ewhen you change a routing it majes the same thing happen *****ing stupid stupid thing is really pissing me off, you cant perform with this live if theres cutouts in audio whenever you switch tracks....it wasnt doing this before, why in the flying ffff is it doing it now.....
Re: Videos of Push actually being played like an instrument
To be fair, he has got a point with the Scale mode.
Scale mode is very useful for playing thanks to the small distances between intervals, intuitive chord shapes and the large amount of notes on the pad matrix but it also kind of sucks because you are unable to play accidentals or passing notes. Hell, you can’t even play most chords beyond the basic diatonic ones. This is very limiting to say the least.
Chromatic mode enables accidentals and all flavors of chords but is also much less intuitive. Intervals can be large and awkward to reach, chord shapes seem to be an unintuitive mess and you have far less notes to work with.
It is sad really that there is no way to combine the qualities of both modes. Although I admit that I haven’t had that much experience with chromatic mode? I’d be happy to hear of somebody who’s had better experiences with this mode or examples of people who mastered it.

Re: Videos of Push actually being played like an instrument
Push is only a MIDI controller and does absolutely nothing in the signal chain. It shouldn’t affect what comes out of your speakers in any way. I’m pretty sure your problem doesn’t come from Push but from either Live (software), your computer or your audio setup.Inversoundzzz wrote:i dont even care about the piano keys, what about the clicking sound and static sound every time you switch tracks wtf how are you supposed to do anything creativ eon the lfy if whenever you want to switch trackw in note mode it clicks and acause a cutout in the ound. lik ewhen you change a routing it majes the same thing happen *****ing stupid stupid thing is really pissing me off, you cant perform with this live if theres cutouts in audio whenever you switch tracks....it wasnt doing this before, why in the flying ffff is it doing it now.....
Re: Videos of Push actually being played like an instrument
Fair point. I suppose it heavily depends on what kind of music you're going to play on it. I too sometimes miss accidentals in scale mode, but as you say, it's not possible to implement the option of playing them in scale mode, because, well, you're in non-chromatic scale mode.BoddAH wrote:To be fair, he has got a point with the Scale mode.

My main instrument is guitar, and I play reasonably ok. The default chromatic mode makes a lot of sense from a guitarist's viewpoint.

Just want to check: Did you uncheck "Reduced lacency When Monitoring" in the Options menue?!Inversoundzzz wrote:i dont even care about the piano keys, what about the clicking sound and static sound every time you switch tracks wtf how are you supposed to do anything creativ eon the lfy if whenever you want to switch trackw in note mode it clicks and acause a cutout in the ound. lik ewhen you change a routing it majes the same thing happen *****ing stupid stupid thing is really pissing me off, you cant perform with this live if theres cutouts in audio whenever you switch tracks....it wasnt doing this before, why in the flying ffff is it doing it now.....
That solved it for me.

The point is that the interface is quite new and it as any other instrument should take a lot of time and practice to develop any good playing technique. Even harder since there isn't a set of good starting points as when you try to learn the piano and the techniques are greatly documentated and a teacher will go steo by step telling you how to sit, relax, hand possition, etc. etc.
It's ok if you don't like it, I dont like guitars or wind instruments either, I like mallets and drums.
I just feel people is way too concervative regarding instruments and musical interfaces like if all that has been invented after the XIX century can't be an instrument and technique never developed.
I agree that with any instrument you need to feel a conection that inspires you, and for many Push will fail.
For me the greatest obstacle to using push more like an instrument is developing a good hand possition, it feels really akward not being able to use the thumb, and some chrod shapes are really akward. But this limitations could led someone to develop an interesting playing technique.

I'd go even further and say: Playing a DAW as an instrument is different than your traditional instruments. There are many, many limitations elimintated for music composition and sound creation, making it super powerfull, but at the price of more limitations in other aspects.
In a way Push is like a Swiss pocket knife. You can do a lot of things with it, that you could never all do with any other tool, but for each task, it can't be the best tool their is to do that particular task.

Re: Videos of Push actually being played like an instrument
this is what im talking about........it just doesnt have an instrument type feeel to it. to me it seems better thought of as a sequencer....and if i just look at like that, i am oimpressed by that...from that persepcetive.....but if I am looking for it to be a real instrument, i just dont see that so far....it doesn tfeel like an instrument, its just another box with buittons on it....that you PUSH. when i use it i pick it up and it sits in my lap i fdont have it on my desk or table...i find that is alot better for trying to play it,,,or sequence with it....the other thing is...i am now figuring that to get a good sequencersetup going, you need to rally strip down your track number, plus i'm going to using drum rack capabilities more for push, it makes way more sense.....different templates fo performance than studio. you have to think of push as a performane tool a sequencer, when I think of it like that, I am now already seeing how to best utilize it. using it for studio stuff is really annoying from my perspective..it's not integrated well enough for studio workit feels really akward not being able to use the thumb,

Re: Videos of Push actually being played like an instrument
On a related note, does antibody know a good way to find scores that are specifically without accidentals. There is probably a way since many instruments (for example harmonicas and other wind instruments) are specifically tuned to be played in only one diatonic key.
The reason is that I really want to practice playing Push like a real instrument and there’s probably no better way than reading and trying to play scores.

The “Sequent” options lay out all notes in order. this is prolly the best mode, i hadnt tried this mode , this one make the most sense, it has all the notes, and it doesnt wast space with doubles... use chromatic >sequent
im using this one or >4s chromatic......its easier to play chords with the 4s, but theres doubles so it wastes more space.....itts a trade off
