Distorted recordings on my G3 using Live 4

I'm using the M-Audio MobilePre USB on a Mac G3 OS9.2.2 (which is supported by Live 4). Everything sounds fine until playback.. My recorded track is distorted no matter how safe I record without clipping. I reinstalled the newest drivers (mac OS9.2.2) but still have the same problem.

I'm wondering if something is wrong with my "sound device". It's the only choice I have in my Live preferences. It sounds clean through my monitor but I cant get a clean signal recorded no matter what I try.
Any suggestions?

Oh well.. this isn't working. Time to move on to a more professional setup. It's a shame.. i was liking the "sessions" option and looking forward to using Live4 but it doesn't look like M-Audio/Ableton has it's act together yet.
