How to make bass dive sounds automating pitch
Hi all,
I'm kind of a noob when it comes to using Ableton live 9, as I just switched from another DAW. My question is, how do you make that bass diving sound as heard in various EDM songs like Krewella, 13 seconds in at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biaEW_-7bHo or Rage The Night Away (Flosstradamus Remix) 1:27 in at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT7d8hIkuOc. I have tried using the pitch bend envelope for midi and the transposition modulation envelope for audio, but I can't seem to get a similar effect in duration or intensity. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks for the help!!!!!

the first one i guess is a ahort sawtooth with lowcut/bandpass and maybe 1/8 delay
and the second sounds like a wobble bass

Re: How to make bass dive sounds automating pitch
Thanks for your response! I get how to make the original bass sound but what I'm still confused about is how to make the pitch drop down over a period of time?
Re: How to make bass dive sounds automating pitch
I was just about to post this question the other day. No joke.
Can’t listen to the examples or post my own right now. I know about automating the pitch, but when I hear the sound I like it sounds like there is a little more going on than just that, or at least when I do it, it just sounds like an obvious and boring pitch bend. I’ll be following this thread and maybe post some examples later.
Re: How to make bass dive sounds automating pitch
One could try using Operator with 1 oscillator on fixed frequency mode and automating the fixed frequency to do the dive, smooth as butter. If you use multiple oscillators in your bass tone, though, it will be difficult to preserve the tuning in fixed freq. mode, especially if all the oscillators need to dive together.
Re: How to make bass dive sounds automating pitch
Also, I just wanted to clarify I'm talking about the 808 type diving bass sound and not any synth/synth leads. They are almost always sine wave.
Re: How to make bass dive sounds automating pitch
Well then, I just tried what I mentioned with 1 oscillator and it will work a charm.
You'll need to figure out what freq. you want for your pitch since the note will no longer be relevant.

Thanks man! That's basically what I'm looking for. One last question, is there any way to adjust the curve so it's a smoother and more consistent curve? Rather than what you showed in your screenshot? If the automation graph looked like a semi-circle, rather than being mostly flat then dipping out at the end?
Re: How to make bass dive sounds automating pitch
Tweak the curve to taste (from the manual):
Hold ALT (PC) / ALT (Mac) and drag a line segment to curve the segment. Double-click while holding ALT (PC) / ALT (Mac) to return the segment to a straight line.

Shit, now that I know how to do this too I'm going to put some fat bass drops in this new "bangar" I'm working out.
Thanks for asking a question that I myself learned something from in answering.

Sweet man, mucho thanks. If you've got a SoundCloud, I'd be down to hear it when you're done. Cheers!

Heh, here it is. The drops don't come until the outro.
