Unique bands nobody has emulated
Unique bands nobody has emulated
Today all music is derivative of something else until eventually it becomes its own genre. Post bands/artists where nobody is going "They're doing that [insert artist here] thing".
Fleetwood Mac
Primus

In some weird wash I might compare Broken Social Scene to Fleetwood Mac
Although honestly the female vocalist's pipes grate on me. Especially her solo material. Fuck. It's like being abrasively rubbed by a dry sponge

Re: Unique bands nobody has emulated
Fleetwood has surely been emulated plenty of times it's just they didn't have that much if a distinctive sound, did they, apart from Nicks and certain album production styles, like some songs off a Metronomy album made me think they were inspired by some Fleetwood production.
Still though, good question.

Primus are huge King Crimson biters, not that that's a bad thing. Nothing is that unique when you can see everyone's influences.

nobody is a tall order. I don't know everyone. But as much as they have been an inspiration for many post-punk bands, I don't think Sonic Youth has been outright emulated or copied.
But then maybe inspired by and emulated by, are the same thing for you. If so, disregard this post

But isn't emulation/imitation the sincerest form of flattery? So if no-one copied these bands, what does that say about them?
(Purely asking this question just for the sake of it, I like Fleetwood Mac, Sonic Youth, Primus)

Re: Unique bands nobody has emulated
One possibility is that it would be embarrassing to do so. Imagine emulating Lyle Lovett...or Lemmy. People in the audience would be transfixed on looking for facial moles, protruding chins, etc. instead of listening to the tunes. Another reason could be that while garnering "academic" and "artistic" accolades, maybe an artist/band is just flat out painful to listen to - like Neal Young as an example. Or Billy "Fester"" Corgan.tedlogan wrote:But isn't emulation/imitation the sincerest form of flattery? So if no-one copied these bands, what does that say about them?

Oh god, in the late '80s / early '90s around here every second band was "magic" with spiky guitars and shit. The only reason they didn't sound like Beefheart was a lack of Van Vliet larynxes.cmcpress wrote:Beefheart
