Recording Drums

Post by Stone_r » Thu Sep 25, 2014 1:48 pm

Ok, I might get shot down in flames for asking what may seem to be a simple question to some but just after a bit of advice about recording and acoustic set of drums. The kit is a 5 piece with and every piece is mic'd up (2 overheads, kick, 3 toms, snare and Hi-Hat plus an ambient room mic sometimes). My question is what equipment (interfaces etc) would I need to record this so each mic is recorded on a seperate track eg Track 1 kick, Track 2 Snare etc etc. Just need to get my head around how to route each microphone input into it's own individual track. I'm using Live 8 by the way. Is this possible? Thanks

You need a multi input audio interface. I recently acquired a drum microphone set and use a focusrite scarlet 18i20 audio interface (has 8 good sounding microphone preamps, and it's relatively inexpensive). You have to plug each microphone into a preamp input on the audio interface. Then create multiple tracks in Ableton and set each input to the corresponding audio input of the audio interface. You'll need to arm all of the tracks for recording then hit record and you'll get an audio clip for each individual mic input.

There are many options for audio interfaces but the one I have works well for it if you're interested.

Of course it's possible. You just need a soundcard with enough inputs (i'd say 8 minimum for drums), the set up within live is easy.

If your soundcard has enough channels but not enough inputs, try one of these. http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/ADA8000.aspx

This gives you enough inputs and pre-amps via ADAT optical

Appreciate your replies, I just couldn't fathom out how to assign the inputs through the interface into the individual tracks for recording but I get it now. Sometimes we are blind to the most simplest solutions!
