Re: Ello

Re: Ello
Interesting. I probably wasn't going to join anyway, but in many eyes it may have even sounded to good to be true. I'm happy enough with the G+ I do nothing with.
I don't think it will be long before Facebook is just for elders while the kids move onto something cooler, at least the mainstream american ones who may be behind the times compared to other 'social cultures'.
But who's to say even with Ello taking VC $$$ that it's a test and there's a better alternative to the exit strategy, just at the meantime they have to see how it pans out first?
I say stick to IM's, irc and YT. Everything else is lame. Not counting face-to-face communication obviously.
But really it seems like a social network site is obsolete at this point, when multiple alternatives that work together are better anyway.

Re: Ello
The only social network I would ever join, would leave me with all my data on my computer (or rented server space of choice). When I turn it off, I'm gone...
A thing like this actually exists in Friendica, it's open source, which is good in so far that they don't need an exit strategy, so no danger of me turning from user to product, but that unfortunately also means so far you need almost an engineering degree, to get it up and running.
But it's a really cool project and it does interface with Facebook, so you can read and send status updates etc.

Re: Ello
Although their motives may possibly be noble I think their grasp exceeds their reach.
Wonky dev team
They do not have a solid product which can do what is required before users become frustrated, and they are also backed by venture capital which will one day soon say "right, we are cashing in so hand over the user data" . There is no way this company can grow at the speed required to add features and not become reliant on VC money, and once reliant on VC money you need a sound capitalisation plan. "Freemium" is unlikely to excite investors here, in the social realm, I suspect the small development team of being novices with their heads in the sand, their implementations and team structure tell me that.
I bet that as a small crew of excited amateurs when they saw that initial tranche of VC cash cone in they skimmed the line about capitalisation and Exits. They rationalised the lawyer speak into what the wanted to hear. There's no way their stated motives align with those of their backers.
The reviews so far
Because i know a lot of alt performer gender annoying people they all joined it, so I've had some reviews off them. Essentially - Nothing works correctly,
invites dont seem to send, or get trashed, post notifications dont work or are invisible, it is near impossible to "like" something, it is near impossible to add a picture to something, there are no apps for the mobile generation, there are no "groups" for people to join and actually converse. In short, most people are saying : I can't work this, it's a wasteland, im not sure if i'm doing it right". IE : terrible UX design by the team.
My girlfriend (who now has a few hundred followers on there) said "it's like shouting into a hole, I give it a week"

Edit, here's something about the VC backers of Ello
