2.8 GHz Quad Core i7 vs. 2.4 GHz dual core i5?

Post by DVISN » Tue Sep 23, 2014 6:16 pm

So I'm thinking about getting a new MBP w/ all the bells and whistles. I'm just wondering... If I'm about to drop $2.7k, if I'm going to see that much of an increase in performance?

Current machine:
2.4GHz MBP w/ Intel Core i5
8 GB DDR3 Ram

The MacBook Pro I'm eyeing:
2.8GHz i7 Quad Core
16GB Ram

Also, I've heard that the 32 bit version of Ableton doesn't allow you to use more than like 4GB of ram? Is this true?

You would no doubt see a performance bump, but probably not that huge.

And yes 32 bit Live can only access 4 GB of ram.

Bought the 2.8GHz Quad Core i7 with the 1TB hard drive, picking it up in a few days. Should be a decent improvement from my mid 2011 dual core macbook pro.

Hey Cluster,

Just wanted to touch base. Are you noticing a big difference? I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Also, did u jump up to the 64 bit version? I havent tried that yet do to plugin updates.

Thx!!

Im picking it up on Thursday and should be all good to go on Friday, will let you know. I jumped onto the 64bit version a while ago because I have 16gb of RAM available and that alone made a massive difference, no more "out of memory crashes". Then I just used JBridge to bridge all the 32bit plugins and that seems to work pretty smoothly.

You can see an increase right away by going 64 bits. Unless you use discontinued plugins, most of them are now 64 bits.

I used to crash with live at around 2.8 gigs of RAM
MBP M1 Max 64 GB Ram, OSX 15.7.4
Live 10.1.43 Suite
Live 11.3.35
Live 12.3.6
Interface : RME Fireface UCX

Hey Cluster, just checking in. Am thinking about heading to Apple tonight. How would you rate your reaction? Is the difference amazing?

Best,

Sorry forgot to check back in on this thread. Yes the difference is amazing! A lot of my projects would be glitching as soon as I hit play but now it barely hits the CPU meter. Have been on 64bit for a while now, definitely worth it.

Awesome, I went ahead and bought the new comp. Thanks for your feedback! Too bad the Thunderbolt migration is such a headache. Going to apple store today to get everything migrated. Can't wait!
