Instead of side-chaining compressor, he's side-chaining an envelope shaper. I am not so sure if this would be more beneficial but I would like to know how to do this in Ableton.
thanks.
How would I do this in Ableton?

Probably an M4L device that does this...

I like the level of control of Clip Envelopes in Ableton Live. You'll find it in the Clip View/Envelopes/Clip/Volume.

That's the straight-forward way, but I'd rather control the volume of a Utility device inserted on the chain so that you can leave the volume faders for mix levels!*
You can even Unlink the Volume Envelope Clip so that the volume envelope can be fine-tuned once (and repeats loops every half-bar) while the bass pattern loops every 4 bars.
Unlink!

Those work for material that is already recorded but what about performing sounds live? You can use the above methods of clip envelopes with dummy clips.
or you can use the sidechaining effect shown in the video with Live devices such as Compressor, Gate, or Autofilter. These all have sidechaining built into them. Just click on the down-ward facing arrow-triangle to open them up.
Settings like this on compressor give the common compressor sidechaining. It reduces the volume of the bass by compressing it which is not exactly the same as just attenuating the volume.

Settings like this will tell autofilter to sweep up and remove the bottom end of your bass every time the kick hits. Cool effect but not often useful.

Settings like this on Gate will act most like the settings on that Volume envelope plugin from the video. Notice is sidechained and Flipped.

Or for something that just runs and runs, there's autopan

Yes, there are Max for Live envelope followers, but I recommend that you start with with these.

Re: How would I do this in Ableton?
Thanks, Steve. Much appreciated. Clip envelope seems pretty close, thanks. But it would be just way too inconvenient in real-life uses for me.
BTW, is there a m4l envelope shaper with side-chain? I've searched and searched but found none.

not much envelope control, but there is Max Api CtrlEnvFol included with Live
A great resource for Max for Live presets is

Max for Live is open source. I think.

you can do this with the plugin from Cableguys - " volume shaper ". specifically, you can trigger a user drawn envelope via a midi note ( which would replace the Sidechain audio equivalent signal ) - 15euro bargin.
