Hang on... couldn't that also apply to any website/service that you upload or transfer your files through? Once the data passes through their servers...

"Mr Sinclair explains "In reality there is little difference between your ownership and their license when the terms of the licenses over your content are this broad.""

From an old article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/s ... -life.html

Haha... never even thought about it covering the audio before.

http://www.reelseo.com/youtube-copyright-ownership/

"YouTube always allows the owners to retain ownership of their work. But what they require in their terms of service is that you grant to YouTube a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual license to freely sub-license, re-distribute, re-publish, monetize, and whatever they may want to do with your video. They're basically requiring that you grant YouTube all of the same rights that you have with your video, short of turning over your rights to them."

So in theory, you could make a compilation of all your favourite tunes/videos and license that directly from YouTube and bypass the artists?

Surely not?

Understood. But could you approach Youtube and license those videos for your own UFC comp? Reading this: "you grant to YouTube a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual license to freely sub-license" it would appear so. Obviously I'm missing something?

Not sure if you genuinely misread or misinterpret things or choose to be contrary?

If you are referring to what I wrote, it was in response to what WARNER want. Not what I want or suggesting that you want it either.

swishniak posted the deal info and then "whatever that means..." - it was specifically in response to what that means. Maybe.

You do make your point and I agree with you.

I am simply interested to know what else, other than using CD baby you would do to help ensure you can survive solely from music sales and not even include merchandise? You want no part in the way it's shaping up out there, so why not discuss what you DO want a part in. It could be inspiring to hear. I won't keep pestering you to share it though. All the best with whatever you are up to.
I'm not sure why you think this is about you.
I made no such indication.

And concerning what I'll do: I outlined my thought on this in my first response to you. I don't have a more detailed plan yet. Making commercially viable music would have to come first though.

I uploaded a picture comp video once to youtube. I used a commercially available song I don’t have the rights to. Automatically under the video showed the song and artist name and provided a link to buy the track on iTunes or Amazon. Everybody won.

so, the individual can opt out of any rights by removing it from there account,no? that way, if you dont agree your video being used by youtube for some other party, boom....delete your video and its no longer youtubes.
this makes sense.

this is actually kind of cool, but i suspect it only works a small portion of the time. like only with artists that have their tracks in iTunes or Amazon... for example.
so Tom would be fucked

What If I would put my track myself on iTunes/Amazone though?! That's not all that difficult to do nowadays. I think it may even be an option when you sign up with CD Baby. If not there are other services.

yes, but they would take a cut and that's so unfair to you as an artist.

If it helps, the reason I thought it was about the Warner details (not me) was because it appeared to be in reference to data collection and spying on fans... it came after that post. It's an easy assumption to make and apologies if it was incorrect. Not sure what you were meaning if it wasn't about that.

Thanks though for re-iterating about the plans. It's always interesting to hear about people's ideas. Hopefully, if it's commercially viable, you can ultimately add it to whatever site you want and do well. All the best.

My roommate got his tracks on iTunes and Amazon through tunecore.com, looks like they also get your music on Spotify and other services. It wasn’t free but the prices are reasonable.
