looking for specific type of music
looking for specific type of music
Alright, so you guys are the best resource I know of for all things music/DJ related.
I must admit that I am far from an expert when it comes to identifying different types of dance music, i.e. house, club, trance, techno, etc. I can sometimes identify a genre, but on the whole I have a hard time differentiating them.
I am trying to find and acquire more of a certain type of music I have been hearing periodically. I'll try to describe it as best as I can. It always has a good funky beat, is a mix of jazz, funk, house, sometimes is referred to as fusion, etc. I usually hear a rhodes or wurlitzer line filling up the background, but not always. At times, it sounds like an old Beastie Boys funk loop with a rythmic sax lead and some great scratching on top. The tempo tends to be around the 100-125 bpm. Many times there is a melodic rap on top. I recently heard a club DJ here in Detroit [Royal Oak, actually] playing before a fusion jazz band was to come on, and everything he played fit this category. Don't ask me why I didn't go talk to him, it just never occured to me.
I assumed this would be jazz funk fusion or jazz hip hop fusion, but I can't seem to find any authoritative resources on it.
If this makes ANY sense at all to anyone, do me a favor and point me in the direction where I can explore some prominent artisits in this style, purchase or download music, and generally learn more about these types of music.
Thanks in advance, you guys rock, except for that one dude. You know who I'm talking about.

Thanks guys, these are good starts.
What I'm looking for is still a little different, though. The backbone beat/style/feel of the music I'm looking for has a little more jazzy/funky feel to it. Most of the music referenced above, while great in its own right, has more of a dance/house feel to it.
Again, though, I appreciate the leads, it is all great music.
Any other thoughts out there?

Draff,
Have a listen to the track “Rentstrike” by Groove Collective from the album called Groove Collective, it’s a few years old now, I suppose you would have call it Acid Jazz back then, Acid Jazz has become less popular or a less popular term for it here in UK, not sure what you would call it now possibly nu-jazz?
I’ve got a few records that sound similar to this, but I haven’t listened to them much over the last couple of years, so I can’t of the top of my head give you a list of thing to check out.
But check the track out at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... 5?v=glance
If it’s the type of thing your looking for, check out the other artists listed on the page.
Also the Groove Collective’s album called Declassified is very good too.

Thanks for the posts, peeps. I have scoured through alot of this stuff, and there is definitely music in there similar to what I'm looking for. However I still haven't heard that one track that is exactly the jazzy, funky, hip-hoppy sound I'm looking for. Once I find it, I can point you to it and get help identifying exactly what style it falls under, and where to find more of it.
Keep the links and suggestions coming, though, I am definitely finding some great music!

i think you might also be interested in "bruk" aka brokenbeats.. fairly nu sound born from west london but quickly branched world wide.. still quite underground and will probably stay that way because its an aquired taste and not so much for younger audiences..
im absolutely obsesed with it right now and think ive finally found my steez with bruk.
check out www.brokenbeatradio.com for an example.
other artists to check
bugz in the attic
mark de clive low
jerremy ellis
domu
new sector movements
bembe segue
most of the old acid jazz guys are now doing bruk..
patrick forge of da lata is one name i know thats stemed from the old acid jazz days i know off... im pretty sure most of these guys came from either acid jazz.. funky house, lotsa dnb producers turned aswell
its really just like acid jazz meets afrobeat but updated and more current.. in tune with todays beats and drum programming..
also check out jazzanova who in many ways restored that old classic sound and inpired all of us to get back in touch with jazz music
peep our label aswell
peace hope you like some of the above
oops almost forgot 4hero aswell
also for a sick label holding it down on the jazz tip
ubiquity records
original jazz soul funk... some bruk and other stuff aswell
ubiquity reminds me of the modern day motown in every possible way

The best site I've found for getting my head around the different styles of electronic music. It's allot of fun to browse as the author has his own humorous takes on each style
