So now Google jumped into the ring and wants to out Spotify, Spotify.
Introductury price only 8USD/month. :x

With Googles deep pockets the hope for bancruptcy of that business model just died...

^ :) ... It's nothing but romance to think the tides will turn mate. It's a shame but there it is... now, let's get over it and on to how do we make it work for us.

That's a bit personal :D but actually no, not in the slightest. Quite the opposite and am still selling music on physical media. No self instigated promo from me, Soundlcoud, Facebook or whatever. I find it all crass. And just maybe it's lost me sales... :) Personal choice though.

Even so, I would be foolish not to question all options no? A middle ground? Not so militant in every moment?

In answer to you being annoyed at self entitled listeners, I gave a suggestion of what I do... I don't believe I have the right to demand I am compensated for making music. I work at making it happen if I want it and to do that I remain open minded about any service out there. I guess that's where we differ right now. I'm not angry about streaming, I'm under the radar testing and asking if things work, hence this forum blip.

I had hoped that the thread or a new thread would turn into a group of people in the same boat, sharing what was/is working for them in this day and age, that is all. So far, mostly forum banter and little real world data. I already gave a membership site case that I was selling for $14.99 about 5 years ago. Any one else?
TomViolenz wrote: Answer me this then: When does anything become a real job that you deserve to get payed for?!
Does it have to stop being fun for this to happen?!
Deserve? That's all in the eye of the person that you are trying to charge right? Does a donate button work better in the case of deserving?

When you have what I want or need to survive I will trade. If you have enough wool to trade then we can forget about money.

Anything else is luxury goods... and music falls under this category, unfortunately. Dealers of the finest sand, with a market stall in the desert.

And you're totally fine with Piracy and people stealing your music anyway... so...

Doesn't have to stop being fun no, but it usually does once money becomes involved on any level where you don't have enough of it to be free of it's influence on your pure creativity.

I answered with my humble opinions.

I would ask you, in return, something that I wonder and had already asked...

How do we as artists put a price on the actual music? How much is a track worth. NOT the physical media you want to charge for, the actual music. Is it worth more because it took me months to produce, whilst yours took a year or a day?

So if you have any thoughts as to how to set a price for what we create (not a recording service or time), that is NOT based around the delivery mechanism, then I think we will all have a winning solution.. finally music becomes worth something in and of itself, because at the moment (and as you point out) whether any of us like it, people are being educated that music is practically free! :(

I don't believe we can price it. I hope I'm wrong.
TomViolenz wrote: But to go so far as to except their point and to say: My work has no value, and it's right for the audience to demand for me to work for free, is just beyond submissive.
I have never said my or your or anyone's work has no value and I don't think people demand music for free in full awareness, so much as they have no basic concept of having to pay. That has gone. I said I don't expect or demand as a God given right, that me making art deserves a reward in finances. It's nice when it happens, but it's my choice and I don't bemoan the future.

For perspective, I sometimes have to deal in an area where the product pricing is based on perception of VALUE for the end user. Some people are charging $497 for a few online videos... 8O others are charging $1000 an hour for consulting fees... but it's seen as a bargain by the user, because of the value in the content. Not the delivery system. The total opposite of music right now. :(

What is the content and benefit of our music to the listener? A smile? An emotion? Not easy to use price is it? iTunes say 0.99c one time.

Underground and overground usually don't mix... but there is a sweet spot and that's all I'm interested in...

Am sure the people making it work are doing just that, not posting about it on here, unfortunately... and with that...

I really hope this doesn't push it on to page 14...

How do I delete my account? Seriously.

"Swift seemed less concerned about her missed earning potential and more interested in how Spotify offering her songs for free"
"She pointed out that other streaming services such as Beats Music and Rhapsody charge customers “for a premium package in order to access my albums.”

Different conversation then? She's fine with the low rates of '0.0000000whatever it is'... just not the ad sponsored free level? Understandable.

There is good news and bad news:

The good news is that the tools of music production are at last in the hands of the workers.
The bad news is that the tools of music production are at last in the hands of the workers.

This is true no matter if you are making music to love by, peaceful relaxation music, background for porno flicks, ISIS marching music, elevator music, background for games, commercial, etc. ad infinitum ..

And these days, it is so EASY to make music, especially with all the presets in the various soft synths, and the ability to control tempo - no scale practice necessary (I play Flamenco, where scale practice is very difficult and essential - very physical and requires instantaneous coordination of the fingers of BOTH hands....)

Above an IQ of perhaps 103, much more is dependent on social contacts within the industry (those who have money to fund projects over time), and one's maintenance of those contracts.

But I, too, was an idealist once .. in the 1960's ... (sigh)....
