GT Advanced was into solar panel manufacturing and that business totally collapsed in 2013 when they could no longer suck off the government's teat for subsidies. What did that mean? They immediately lost a billion dollars in revenue. Which, incidently, was all they were worth.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Revealing that Americans still excel in assembling all types of justifications, a report released Monday by researchers at Rutgers University confirmed that the United States remains the world’s unrivaled leader in manufacturing excuses. “Our data shows that the American people are able to churn out millions of excuses every day, a rate five times faster than that of our closest international competitor,” said author Tom McCullough, who noted that the country continues to dominate in every excuse-manufacturing subsector, with Americans mass-producing rationalizations for everything from why they didn’t finish college to which of their colleagues should be blamed for them not receiving a promotion. “Whether U.S. citizens are trying to get out of work, an upcoming party, or even a relationship, American excuses are still the envy of the industrialized world. Few countries can produce the same quality or quantity of pretexts, alibis, or half-assed explanations.” McCullough added that the report probably could have been far better had his team been given more time and resources.

I watched a documentary about the last days of the ZIL factory, was on dutch tv few days ago.

Moscow Joint-Stock Company "The Likhachov Plant" AMO ZIL "Zavod imeni Likhachova", more commonly called ZiL (Russian: ????? ????? ???????? (???)—Likhachov Plant, literally "Plant named for Likhachov") is a major Russian truck and heavy equipment manufacturer based in the City of Moscow, which also produced armored cars for most Soviet leaders, as well as buses, armored fighting vehicles, and aerosani. The company also produces hand-built limousines and high-end luxury sedans (?????????? ?????????????????? ??????, also translated as "luxury vehicle") in extremely low quantities, primarily for the Russian government. ZIL passenger cars are priced at the equivalent of models from Maybach and Rolls-Royce, but are largely unknown outside the CIS and production rarely exceeds a dozen cars per year.

What is going on there is so absurd, you can't make up or believe before you have watched it.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands we are busy reintroducing the otter.

The otter, a solitary freshwater-dwelling predator, could be found in large numbers in the Netherlands until the middle of the previous century. The population decreased as a result of water pollution from PCBs, increasing traffic, fragmentation of their habitat, and expansion of the fishing industry. The last otter in the Netherlands died in 1989, and the animal became extinct in this country. The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (Ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit, LNV) decided to reintroduce the otter, and between 2002 and 2008, 31 otters from Eastern Europe were released in the Wieden-Weerribben nature reserve in the province of Overijssel. Alterra kept track of these otters between 2002 and 2009.

Observation
In order to monitor the primarily nocturnal otters, it is necessary to be able to observe them. Therefore the otters were fitted with transmitters at the time of their release, so that their initial distribution could be recorded. Because the transmitter batteries only work for approximately one year, a blood sample was also taken of each animal released. A genetic “fingerprint” was taken of the DNA obtained from each otter. This data makes it possible to chart the otters’ behaviour. On the basis of the DNA obtained from the spraint (otter dung) collected, it is possible to determine the activities of the different otters. The fact that new DNA profiles have been found suggests that the otters are reproducing, and it is thereby also possible to determine who the parents are.

This indirect observation of the otters by means of non-invasive genetic monitoring, a method perfected by Alterra specifically for use with the otters, is working well. With the DNA database, it is possible to make maps of the otters’ annual distribution. If dead otters are reported, often as a result of traffic accidents, it is also possible to determine their origin.

Results
The DNA monitoring has demonstrated that male otters require large territories, while daughters use a portion of their mother’s territory. At the time of reintroduction, two dominant males chased the other males from the release area. This increased the chance of inbreeding, necessitating the introduction of fresh bloodlines. This advice was presented to the Ministry during reintroduction. It was also stated that new releases of otters could best consist of females in surrounding areas, because the males will naturally follow them.

The locations of otters which had been run over resulted in suggestions being presented to managers of infrastructure, such as fencing off roads, reducing speed limits, or building tunnels.

Insights
Hans Peter Koelewijn, molecular ecology researcher and geneticist for the otter project, is positive about the project. “The genetic techniques have enabled us to gain a great deal of insight into the otter population at the time of reintroduction. However, it is unfortunate that because of the limited budget, it is nearly impossible to continue the intensive monitoring at this time. Now, after several years, this is the time when it is most interesting to see whether the population can sustain itself. We are currently limiting the monitoring to dead animals which are brought in.”

Uh oh, it’s being suggested that GT Advances failed deal with Apple might be the result of mismanagement and inexperience.

GT quickly set out to hire 700 staffers. Hiring moved so quickly that at one point in late spring, more than 100 recent hires didn't know who they reported to, a former manager said. Two other former workers said there was no attendance policy, which led to an unusual number of sick days.

GT managers in the spring authorized unlimited overtime to fill furnaces materials to grow sapphire. But GT hadn't built enough furnaces yet, so many workers had nothing to do, two former employees said.

"We just kept sweeping the floors over and over," one of the former employees said. "I just saw money flying out the door."

Oh com’on! It's clearly the result of Apple being a big bully that forces its suppliers to “put on their big boy pants”.
